Huawei MateBook 16S review

Introduction This is the new Huawei MateBook 16S - a laptop matching the overal design of last year’s MateBook 16, but a notable shift in internals to Intel’s Alder Lake. If you’re not familiar with Huawei’s MateBook 16, it has a 16-inch display with a taller 3:2 aspect ratio, packed into a svelte body that weighs just under 2kg. And if you’re unfamiliar with display aspect ratios, we’ll lay it down for you nice and simple. A conventional laptop screen is 16:9, perfect fit for wide videos, whereas a 3:2 display is only slightly narrower, but has far more vertical space. It makes it...

Top 10 trending phones of week 31

Week 31 brought a change to the top spot in our trending chart. Nothing phone (1)'s launch hype died down a bit and the Zenfone 9 replaced it at the top. The Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra also took advantage and took the silver medal, leaving the three-time champion in third. Redmi Note 11 went up a position to place fourth, while the newly announced OnePlus 10T slid into fifth place. The Galaxy A53 and Apple iPhone 13 Pro Max are the first two phones to be exactly where we left them last week in sixth and seventh, respectively. Google's Pixel 6a is down to eight position, while the...

Motorola Moto G62 in for review

The Motorola Moto G62 is among the few handsets around the €200 mark that offer 5G connectivity thanks to the cost-efficient Snapdragon 480+ chip. At first glance, one it's somewhat puzzling as the Snapdragon 680 powers up the presumably lower-standing Moto G52, but in reality, the 480+ is a faster chip and it's the only one with a 5G modem. So it's mostly Qualcomm's naming scheme to blame. The handset is built around a fast 120Hz 6.5-inch IPS LCD and carries as set of stereo speakers for a more complete multimedia experience. There's only one available memory option and that's...

Weekly poll: is the OnePlus 10T the one to get or one to skip?

The OnePlus 10T is here and it may represent a change in the company’s course. Previous T-models were mid-season upgrades of existing models, but there is no vanilla OnePlus 10 to upgrade. Instead the 10T slots into the lineup of premium OnePlus offerings. With a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 this is definitely a flagship, in fact, it is the fastest OnePlus on the market right now. But the phone has more in common with the OnePlus 10R than its does with the 10 Pro. The 10T gets Qualcomm’s best, the 10R has MediaTek’s second best Dimensity 8100-Max. But other than that they are quite similar....

Flashback: two decades of fingerprint readers on mobile devices

In late 2000 Toshiba unveiled laptops with fingerprint readers, which allowed us to securely unlock their device with a touch of a finger, instead of having to memorize complex passwords. The first phones with a fingerprint reader on board appeared at the same time. We think that the very first was a Sagem MC 959 ID, although apparently Siemens had a working prototype as early as 1998. Possibly the first phone with a fingerprint reader, the Sagem MC 959 ID (image credit) This was quickly adopted by some PDAs as it was seen as a feature for business devices - why else would you need...
