Xiaomi unleashes the power, launches the affordable Redmi 9A with 6 GB RAM

Xiaomi launched the affordable Redmi 9A earlier this year with a big display, big battery but a modest amount of memory - up to 3 GB RAM and 32 gigs of storage. The phone later got relaunched in India under a new name - Redmi 9i - and this time it sells with 4/64 GB memory. Now, the smartphone manufacturer is upping its game - the entry-level Redmi 9A is now getting announced with 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage in China, and the phone costs the equivalent of $145. The Redmi 9A has only one camera on the back - 13 MP sensor with f/2.2 aperture and 1080p video recording. There is a...

Top 10 trending phones of week 39

Now that's something you don't see very often - or at all for that matter. The Apple iPhone 12 Pro Max tops our trending chart for a second week in a row, despite still being at least a couple of weeks away from going official. We have a new runner-up with the newly announced Samsung Galaxy S20 FE, knocking the Poco X3 NFC down to third. The Samsung Galaxy M51 retains the fourth position, while the newly announced Poco X3 (the non-NFC version) shot straight to fifth. The Samsung Galaxy A51 is seventh with flanked by the Redmi Note 9 pair - the Pro is sixth and the vanilla is down...

Honor Watch GS Pro review

Honor Watch GS Pro is the company's first rugged smartwatch, aiming to become the best accessory the company can offer to outdoorsy types and hikers. We got to spend a couple of weeks with a unit and now we are about to share what impressed us and what rubbed us the wrong way. Introduction The Watch GS Pro is advertised as a "rugged smartwatch for urban adventurers." The wearable is arriving as a competitor to the Amazfit T-Rex by Huami rather than products by Garmin or Suunto, which are better for enthusiast sportspeople and professional athletes but command substantially higher...

Week 39 in review: Galaxy S20 FE debuts as major leak details Pixel 5

Welcome to your week's recap, let's get started. The Google Pixel 5 was fully detailed. It will be unveiled on September 30 with a Snapdragon 765G and 8GB of RAM, a 6-inch 1080p OLED with 90Hz refresh rate, 128GB of storage and two cameras on the rear - a regular and an ultrawide (no telephoto this time). It's rumored to cost €629. Samsung unveiled and released the Galaxy S20 FE with a starting price of just €633/$700. It has a 6.5-inch 120Hz Super AMOLED display, a Snapdragon 865 and a 4,500mAh battery with 25W wired and 15W wireless charging. The triple camera has 12MP regular, 8MP 3x...

Flashback: the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3, the phone that was larger than the Galaxy Note

The Samsung Galaxy Note is remembered as a large phone – and it was pretty big indeed, as were its successors. But then in 2013 another pocket-busting titan appeared that dwarfed the Notes as well as any other smartphone of the time. The Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 is aptly named, it had Galaxy S4 looks expanded to encompass a massive 6.3” display. And keep in mind that this was back in the day when 16:9 was the standard aspect ratio – as you know the screen diagonal tells only half of the story. This chonker was 88 millimeters wide (3.5 in). Its other dimensions were saner, 167.6 mm...

Weekly poll: can the Samsung Galaxy S20 FE finally convince you to make the jump?

At long last Europe is getting a Snapdragon-powered Galaxy S20. No, none of the original trio, but the new Samsung Galaxy S20 FE 5G, which packs the Snapdragon 865 chipset and offers both sub-6 and mmWave 5G connectivity. There’s also the Galaxy S20 FE model, which uses the familiar Exynos 990 chipset in an unfamiliar 4G configuration. That one shouldn’t be discounted either as it is cheaper than the local versions of the original S20 models - €633/£600, compared to, say, the Galaxy S20+ 4G, which can be found for a little under €800. The Fan Edition phone is noticeably cheaper in the...

The new phones of the week

We had a busy week with over a dozen new smartphones being thrown our way and in case you missed any of them you’ve come to the right place. We’ll round up all the new phones here to make sure you are up to speed. Realme kicked off proceedings on Monday with the global C17 and the Narzo 20 trio headed to India. Sister brand Oppo gave us the newest member of its Reno4 family - an SE phone with trimmed down specs and even more aggressive price. LG had a quartet of mid-rangers to announce - the K42, K52, K62 and K71, while vivo came just short of that number with its three-strong V20...

Moto G9 Plus in for review

After the Moto G9 Play came to our office, it's now time for the Moto G9 Plus, which was just unveiled. It's a phone, focused on three things - display, camera and battery, and for the price, it scores great on all three. Before we get going - here's the box contents - a 30W charger, a USB-C to USB-C cable and a case. The Moto G9 Play has a large 6.81-inch display of excellent 2400x1080px resolution. Embedded into its corner is punch hole for the 16MP selfie camera. Unfortunately the display is not OLED but IPS LCD and seemingly not one with the best contrast out there. Most...
