Nokia 7.1 now works on Verizon, yours for free after rebate

The Nokia 7.1 has gained support for Verizon Wireless, and received the official certification from the carrier for use on its network. This has happened behind the scenes, and starting this week any Nokia 7.1 purchased in the US that is running software version 3.54E or higher can be brought over to Verizon, activated and used like any other certified smartphone. That would be great news in and of itself, especially for fans of reasonably priced Android mid-rangers, but wait, there's more. The Nokia 7.1 won't be sold by Verizon directly, but you can pick one up from Amazon or Best Buy and...

Facebook hit with $5 billion fine by the US FTC for privacy violations

Following a lengthy negotiation process that took months, today Facebook has agreed to pay a $5 billion fine to the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for user data privacy violations. The FTC's inquiry started after the Cambridge Analytica scandal last year, which harvested the personal data of millions of Facebook users without their consent and used it for political advertising purposes. As part of the settlement, Facebook is promising to employ much better data privacy safeguards in the future. In the company's own words: We will be more robust in ensuring that we identify, assess...

Huawei reports double-digit revenue gains in H1 2019 despite US ban

Despite the rocky end of the first half of 2019 for Huawei, the company was still able to post much better revenues than the same period of last year. Numbers would have certainly been better had it not been for the US restrictions but even so they are quite promising. Huawei recorded 30% increase in revenue over the course of the first half of 2019. The increase stood at 39% for the first quarter but then things went south in May and June. The accelerated 5G deployment helped the company maintain growth with 50 commercial contracts. So now with the US government and Huawei close...

A vivo phone pops up on 3C with 44W charger, could be the NEX 2

A new vivo phone just passed the Chinese certification, 3C, with a model number V1922A and the interesting part is the charger that came with it. It's rated at 44W suggesting that this is a high-end device we are dealing with here. It's only natural for vivo to implement its fast charging tech into its top-shelf phone so we have a very good reason to believe it's a NEX successor - perhaps the NEX 2? Unfortunately, this is the first time we hear about a phone with this model number so we can't be entirely sure. We still need more information to paint a full picture and it's only now...

RED blames ODM for poor camera of first phone, says a second one is on the way

RED's Hydrogen One smartphone wasn't a success. It was delayed and when it finally arrived it was under-specced and way over-priced. Worse yet, it didn't even perform as well as the specs sheet suggested as its camera quality was sharply criticized by early adopters. Now RED founder Jim Jannard has issued a statement in which he clarifies that the issues came from the Chinese ODM (the company that designed the phone to RED's requirements). The ODM was responsible for the mechanical packaging as well as the software integration with the Snapdragon 835 chip. According to Jannard, getting...

Samsung rumored to delay Galaxy Fold launch in smaller markets

While the Galaxy Fold relaunch is fast approaching, Samsung might have some bad news to those in smaller markets. The latest report has it that initial release of the first foldable phone will only include the US, South Korea, Germany, France, India and the UK. This is based on firmware files for the Galaxy Fold units. Earlier the company was developing localized versions of those for a bunch more markets, but now Italy and the Netherlands branches are no longer getting updated. We still don't have an official relaunch date to look forward to, but we hope to hear more about it...

The retailer started gathering registrations for the first flash sale, scheduled for July 31, and at the time of writing this article, over 1.6 million people signed up for the smartphone. One of the big reasons people are so interested in this new gaming device is the super competitive price - it is only CNY3,499, or about $510/€450. But there is a catch - since Tencent helped Asus develop the new ROG Phone II, the conglomerate gets to install...

2020 iPhones to have flexible OLED panels from LG

With LG starting mass production of its flexible OLED panels in Korea this year, Apple is reportedly interested in making a deal with the company. It's believed that the Cupertino-based company will be launching an iPhone with flexible screen in 2020. Apple has used LG as a supplier for iPhone displays overs the years but never as a main one. Samsung has been Apple's go-to display supplier while LG's panels serve as a fallback option. If both companies reach an agreement, this would mean that Apple will reduce its reliance on Samsung for its OLEDs where the Korean company is currently ...

After a few months of testing it out, Netflix is finally ready to launch its exclusive mobile-only plan in India. Since India has the highest number of users watching on mobile devices and downloading content, it only makes sense for the streaming service to launch a tailored plan in the country. The mobile-only subscription will set you back only INR 199 per month which is a little less than $3 as long as you are a resident in India, of course. The plan lets you download and stream in SD (480p) resolution, but you won't be able to cast it on your TV, for example. The plan is now...
