Apple to sell 220 million iPhones in both 2018 and 2019, analyst says

Gene Munster, a long time analyst and purveyor of research notes related to Apple's business, thinks the company is now entering a new phase, one of "greater iPhone visibility". He predicts that Apple's strength going forward will be about services and sustained iPhone sales, and not necessarily unit sales figures and product hype. That's a nice way to basically say the company's market share in smartphones has or is about to peak. Even so, that's not a bad thing - continued sales growth that goes on forever is simply impossible. Munster expects Apple to sell about 220 million iPhones...

As release nears, Samsung's Galaxy Tab S4 gets certified in Russia

After making the rounds at the Wi-Fi Alliance and running the HTML5 and GFXBench benchmarks, the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 has been certified by Russia's telecommunications commission - the EEC. This time around there are no specs to be unearthed from the forms aside from two model numbers - SM-T835, which is highly likely the Galaxy Tab S4, and an unknown SM-T595 - perhaps a lower-spec Galaxy Tab A or Tab E. To rehash what we know and speculate at the moment - the Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 will have a 10.5-inch 2560x1600px 16:10 display (likely a Super AMOLED), a Snapdragon 835 chipset...

Nokia X6 visits Geekbench to test its Snapdragon 636 chipset

It is pretty certain that the Nokia X6 will be powered by a Snapdragon 636 chipset - several leaks have shown as much but now we can add another data point, Geekbench. Results show the phone running Android 8.1 Oreo with a generous 6 GB of RAM. TENAA specs show that this will be the top model, with cheaper 4 GB and even 3 GB options available (perhaps spread out across different regions). JRGRAPH_EXPANDABLE_VERSION = false; GeekBench 4.2 (multi-core) Higher is better Nokia 7 plus 5876 Nokia X6 (pre-release) 4892 Nokia 6 (2018) ...

Xiaomi under fire from Coolpad over patent infringements

It appears the "if you can't beat them, sue them" method is moving to Asia. The Shenzhen-based company Coolpad is suing Xiaomi for infringing UI patents, including multi-SIM card design. According to the lawsuit in a Jiangsu province court, the devices copy "basic communication, display and interactive functions of mobile phones that are difficult to circumvent or replace". Coolpad's subsidiary Yulong Computer Telecommunication Scientific demands Xiaomi companies immediately cease manufacturing and sales of the following phones - Mi 6, Mi Max 2, Mi Note 3, Mi 5X, Redmi Note 4X, and...

Galaxy S10 might get an in-house under display fingerprint reader

Samsung Galaxy Note9 rumors flip-flopped between yes and no on whether the late 2018 flagship will have an under display fingerprint reader. Things seem to have settled on "no" so the rumor mill has moved on to the Galaxy S10. Current under display fingerprint readers work only with OLED displays since they are optical devices. And Samsung is the king of OLED when it comes to phones. However, rumor has it that the company is working on an in-house ultrasonic reader instead. The advantages of such a sensor would be improved accuracy as it captures your finger in 3D while the other...

Xiaomi creates an in-house camera division to improve image quality

Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun sent an internal email (which promptly leaked) that details the creation of an in-house camera department. Jun considers photography one of the most important features of modern smartphones and this division will allow future Mi and Redmi phones to better compete with the top brands. The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S (the first dual camera phone in the Mix series) already scores pretty high on the DxO charts achieving a final score of 97 and a photo score of 101. With a dedicated team working on improving image quality, Xiaomi will be able to get even better. The leaked email...

Nokia X6 price leaks in China

HMD Global is expected to announce a new midranger on May 16 in China. The phone will be named Nokia X6 and will sit between Nokia 6 (2018) and Nokia 7 plus in terms of specs. Yet, according to latest leak, it will be more affordable than both of its siblings. An image appeared on Weibo, suggesting that the Chinese retailer Suning will offer the device for CNY1,499 - the equivalent of €200/$235. The Nokia X6 will arrive with Snapdragon 636 chipset and 3/4/6 GB RAM variants. It will be the first HMD device with a notch and the resolution of its screen will be 2280 x 1080...

Razer schedules event for May 22 in China

The gaming phone competition heated up this year, especially with new challengers coming out of China. Razer might want to bring the fight to them as the company has scheduled an event for May 22 in Beijing. Will there be new products or just a local launch of the Razer Phone? The invite is mum on the subject. The company's first device launched in November last year so it's getting a little old, though perhaps not old enough for a second-gen model. The Razer Phone remains the only one with a 120 Hz screen, which is a definitive gaming feature. And while the Black Shark beats it in...

Huawei Watch 2 (2018) rumor sounds a lot like the 2017 model

Android Wear stalled - perhaps due to lack of new hardware - but Huawei hasn't given up on it, it seems. What is has given is counting to 3, so here's a rumor for the Huawei Watch 2 (2018). To be fair, the specs are pretty similar so this really is more of a refresh of the 2nd-gen watch than a new model. It's not even going to wait for the new Qualcomm chipset and instead use the Snapdragon 2100 (a rejiggered Snapdragon 210) with 768 MB of RAM and 4 GB of storage - same as the current Watch 2. The 2018 edition will also stick with the 1.2" AMOLED display (390 x 390 px), same...

A new batch of Moto C2 and C2 Plus renders leak

A new leak of Moto C2 and C2 Plus brought us more press images, hot on the heels of the first one, which was just a few days ago. Like the first pictures, these reveal only the design. In fact only one of the images is new, but the rest are much clearer this time. Motorola Moto C2 The device with the Motorola logo under the screen is the Moto C2. It packs a plastic body, a conventional 16:9 display and will likely have a Snapdragon chipset inside. According to a promo video, coming from Myanmar, the Oppo F7 Youth will have one camera on the back, no fingerprint scanner, and Diamond Black color variant. Xiaomi may begin accepting Mi 7 pre-orders May 27

An official-looking poster that leaked last month revealed May 23 unveiling for the Xiaomi Mi 7. And now, it looks like the Chinese company will start accepting pre-orders for the device very soon after that, on May 27. This info is based on a display kept outside a China Mobile store pictured below. The Mi 7 is expected to come with a Snapdragon 845 SoC and 8GB of RAM, an in-display fingerprint scanner, as well as an iPhone...
