Although Android Wear hasn't made any significant progress relative to its competitors (Samsung's Tizen and Apple's WatchOS), Google has announced that Android Wear beta is now available for flashing to a test device or via the Android emulator. Google mentions the update is "mainly a technical upgrade to APU 26 with enhancements to background limits and notification channels." This means that the Android Wear update will likely be an incremental update something along the lines of Android Wear 2.X. Google is offering "Notification Channels" on its next version of Android Wear so...

Amazon Alexa calling + messaging now available in UK, Germany, and Austria
Amazon's Echo is able to get software updates very easily. After all, the physical device itself acts as a capsule equipped with mics and speakers for Amazon's cloud service, which the Echo communicates with. Amazon Alexa gained a significant new feature a few months ago that allowed Amazon Echo owners to get in touch with their family and friends who also use the Amazon Echo. This new feature is now available to the Amazon Echo's European markets: UK, Germany, and Austria. Amazon Echo pulses green when there's a pending message or incoming call. If you head into your Amazon...
HTC U11 Life Android One phone has full specs leaked
The Android One program seems to be channeling the mythical Phoenix these days, rising from its ashes and unleashing new reasonably-priced smartphones running stock Android. The Xiaomi Mi A1 and Moto X4 are both part of the new wave of Android One handsets, and they will soon be joined by the HTC U11 Life. This model got its full specs leaked today, courtesy of a source that's been accurate with regard to HTC phones in the past. The U11 Life is said to come with a 5.2-inch 1080p touchscreen, a 16 MP main camera, and a 16 MP selfie snapper. It will be powered by the Qualcomm...
Galaxy Note8 joins the iPhone 8 Plus at the top of DxOMark's smartphone camera rankings
Last month DxOMark crowned the iPhone 8 Plus king of the smartphone cameras, awarding it an overall score of 94 in its testing. Today DxO Labs outed the result achieved by Samsung's Galaxy Note8, and it's... also 94. The iPhone 8 Plus and Galaxy Note8 are thus tied at the top of the DxOMark smartphone camera rankings, for now at least. The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will get official tomorrow, and last year the Pixel jumped straight to the top of the DxO camera chart on the day of its announcement. Then there's the iPhone X, also a possible contender for the No.1 spot, and let's not forget the...
iOS 11.0.2 is out now to fix more bugs
Today Apple has released the second minor update to iOS 11, the hot new version of its operating system that went out in mid-September. iOS 11.0.2 is all about fixing pesky bugs, as its iterative version number reveals. If you have an iPhone or iPad that's still supported, it's recommended to make the jump to 11.0.2 as quickly as possible. That's especially true if you have an iPhone 8 or 8 Plus and have had crackling sounds during phone calls, as this release will fix the bug that caused that. Also taken care of is a bug that caused some photos not to show up in your libraries, and...
Google Pixel 2 XL shown from another angle in Walmart leak that also reveals more Google Home Mini details
Now that we're less than 24 hours away from Google's big hardware-focused event, the new Pixel smartphones simply can't stop leaking. We've seen the Pixel 2 XL in a case yesterday (and from the front), then both the Pixel 2 and its bigger sibling got the press render treatment. How about another angle for the Pixel 2 XL? Thankfully, Walmart has provided that today, after mistakenly listing its pre-order page for the Google Home Mini smart speaker, that should also get unveiled tomorrow. The Pixel 2 XL in this image is in the 'panda' color scheme as you can see. The stereo front...
New leaked image shows Huawei Mate 10 next to its predecessor
Huawei may insist on saying the upcoming Mate 10 is not a smartphone, but it sure leaks like one. Following the huge leak from yesterday, which brought us press renders of the Mate 10 Pro, today a new image compares that device to the Mate 9 from last year, as you can see. It's not clear if this is to scale, but if it is then expect the Mate 10 Pro to be slightly narrower and perhaps a tad shorter than its predecessor. The Mate 10 Pro has a glass back, dual rear cameras with Leica branding (and f/1.6 aperture at least on the main one), a fingerprint scanner under those, and a dual-LED...
Entry-level Honor Holly 4 debuts
Huawei's Honor brand will start selling a new phone in India, starting today. The Honor Holly 4 is available for purchase from Honor's partner stores across India for 11,999 INR or around 155. The Honor Holly 4 is a local version of the Honor 6A, which was unveiled in China back in May for the slightly lower price of around 105. The Honor Holly 4 has a 5-inch screen of 720p resolution and a Snapdragon 430 chipset with 3GB of RAM. There are two snappers on board - a 13MP main camera and 5MP selfie cam. You get a 3,020mAh battery, expandable storage (or dual-SIM) and Android...
WhatsApp finally gets its own emoji set... sort of
After years of using Apple's emoji set across all of its versions, WhatsApp has now finally designed its own emoji set, which is available to those running the latest Android beta. One look at it though and things don't look quite different. Indeed, the set looks awfully similar to the outgoing Apple emoji set, with some elements of the new Android Oreo emoji set with a dash of Twitter emoji set thrown in. While all of these are based on a common instruction from Unicode and it makes sense for them to look similar to reduce lost in translation between devices, they are a bit too...
EE users reporting troubles with activating their LTE-enabled Apple Watch Series 3
If embedded SIMs (eSIM) are the future, we'll have to walk on a rocky road to get there - many EE subscribers are reporting that their Apple Watch Series 3 is failing to connect to the network. This seems to be an EE issue rather than something Apple messed up, but it hasn't been a smooth launch either way. Users are typically faced with one of several errors including: "activation failed" and "this account is not ready to use with Apple Watch". If you're experiencing issues activating your LTE-enabled Series 3 watch, you can dial 150 for help - EE has trained personnel standing...
Here's how to deal with iTunes' corrupted or incompatible backup error
Apple just launched the new iPhone 8 and a lot of older iPhone buyers are upgrading to it. If you are a sensible person, you would have backed up your old iPhone to your computer using iTunes (let's be real, none of us are paying Apple for more iCloud storage for cloud backup). But when you get your shiny new iPhone 8 (or any of the other iPhones that are still on sale) and try to restore from your old back, your iTunes throws this in your face. The problem is here that iTunes is an even bigger pile of trash than what we already thought it was. Fortunately, your backup is still...
Android Pay passes 1,000 supported financial institutions
Android Pay has added another 16 financial institutions, surpassing the 1,000 mark, now stranding 1,012. The service is adding banks, retailers and institutions in the US, UK, Canada, Russia, Belgium, Japan, New Zealand, Singapore, Australia, Poland, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Ireland. The list of supported businesses (and countries) is ever growing but there are more than a few that are still holding off, namely Barclays Bank in the UK. So far Apple has been more instrumental in adding support for its Apple Pay than Google has been with Android Pay. Here's the latest additions to the...
Android 8.0 Oreo is on the charts, pre-Marshmallow versions are shrinking
The latest numbers are in and Oreo is on the charts! True, version 8.0 measured just 0.2% of all Androids out there but we think that number will grow quickly at the end of the year when a variety of flagships get the update. As for older versions, 7.0 Nougat grew 2 percentage points while 6.0 Marshmallow remained flat. On the plus side, Lollipop, KitKat and all the other older versions are shrinking slowly but surely. Version Codename API Distribution 2.3.3 - 2.3.7 Gingerbread 10 0.6% 4.0.3 - 4.0.4 Ice Cream...
More Pixel 2 and XL 2 images show both front and back
Take that case off, Pixel XL 2. Evan Blass delivers yet again, this time with an unobstructed view of the XL sequel and even the smaller Pixel 2. You can see what we suspected from previous leaks - the Pixel XL 2 will have slim bezels (though we wouldn't go as far as calling it bezel-less) while the Pixel 2 will have chunky bezels, unbecoming of an expensive flagship. Google Pixel XL 2 You can probably tell by the image, the Pixel XL 2 has a 6" with 18:9 aspect ratio and QHD+ resolution. The 5" Pixel 2 will stick to regular 1080p. Both Pixels get front-firing stereo speakers...
ZTE confirms the nubia Z17s is coming October 12
ZTE is gearing up to announce a new nubia smartphone in China on October 12 and its latest teaser confirms it will be the Z17s - an update to the Z17 with a new, bezelless screen on the front. The image sent out by ZTE sports the letter S, the nubia logo and the 12.10.17 date - all of which seems to solidify the Z17s as the upcoming phone. We know very little about the Z17s at this point. A recently leaked image shows what looks like the display with minuscule bezels on all sides. We'll find out soon enough. Source
