LG patents a 17-inch laptop with rolling display

With Oppo’s recent concept phone announcement and TCL’s concept devices in the not so distant past, rollable displays are the next smartphone trend after folding ones. LG’s already got a rollable TV on its high-end Signature lineup starting at $60,000, and the company recently filed for the "Rollable" name, supposedly for an LG-made smartphone with a slide out display. The company might also be dabbling with the idea for a future laptop. LG’s latest patent (via RootMyGalaxy) shows a whole new laptop form factor, one that would involve a 17-inch display that rolls up to stow away. The...

You get two colors for the leather, to go with the two hues in which the foldable smartphone is sold. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold2 leather cover On the other hand, it's not every day that we see a manufacturer release a...

Teardown of M1-powered MacBook Air and Pro shows very little has changed

The new M1-powered MacBooks promise a computing revolution, but it seems that said revolution is entirely concentrated into the M1 chip. The rest of the laptop is more or less the same. iFixit took apart the new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro and put them side by side with the Intel-powered models that they replace. And, well, see for yourself, you’d be hard pressed to say what has changed. Even the fan in the Pro is the exact same component. MacBook Pro: Intel (left) • M1 (right) Why is it much quieter than the Intel version then? Simple, the Apple M1 is so efficient it barely...

DxOMark tests iPhone 12 Pro selfie camera, gives it a solid if unspectacular mark

Last week DxOMark published its iPhone 12 Pro camera review and the results showed slight improvements over its predecessor. Now, the selfie cam review is out and the verdict is similar – it’s a balanced and capable sensor though not quite industry-leading. Still, shots were noticeably better than the iPhone 11 Pro duo from last year. The iPhone 12 Pro’s front cam managed a 98-point total score, placing it seventh in the overall rankings. It shares the spot with the Asus Zenfone 6 and is just a point behind Samsung’s Galaxy Note10+ which sits at 99 points. iPhone 12 Pro selfie...

Huawei Mate X2 arrives at TENAA, unknown 5G phone tags along

The TET-AN00/TET-AN10 – which is believed to be the Huawei Mate X2 – has received the stamp of approval from TENAA, a few days after passing through the 3C. This means the phone is good to go and the official announcement could be around the corner. The full information from the certification process has not been published yet. Leaks suggest that the new foldable will keep the screen size at 8”, but will switch to an in-folding design (the original X leaves the display outside). As seen in patent drawings, this change requires a secondary screen to remain outside – a narrow 4.5” panel....

Apple and Facebook lock horns over data collection practices

Apple has sent a letter to human rights watch groups in which it is reassuring the new iOS 14 will have new privacy restrictions. The company also said Facebook is “collecting user data with disregard of user privacy”. A response from Menlo Park came almost immediately, saying Apple is throwing a smoke bomb and trying to distract from other issues. The social network claimed Apple is using its dominant market position to self-preference its own data collection while making it nearly impossible for competitors to use the same data. Apple has delayed the rollout of privacy...

Ericsson argues against Huawei's ban in Sweden

Huawei was recently banned from supplying 5G equipment to carriers in Sweden, the home country of its rival Ericsson. It has now received support from an unexpected place as the Ericsson CEO Borje Ekholm said in an interview that this decision is restricting free competition and trade. He also said the ban will delay the rolling out of the new technology. Exactly one month ago the Swedish Post and Telecom Authority (PTS) released a list of four companies that are allowed to compete for 5G frequencies in the North-European country. Two of the conditions were that installations must not...

Google Stadia is coming to iOS as a web app

Google has announced that its game-streaming service Stadia will soon debut on iOS. It won't arrive in the form of a dedicated iOS app, as Apple said those violate the terms of its App Store, so instead it will be available to iOS users in the form of a progressive web app (PWA). A PWA allows developers to deliver an app-like experience through a website, and by using a web app to bring Stadia to iOS, Google will be able to bypass Apple's App Store rules. Google hasn't revealed when exactly Stadia will launch on iOS, but confirmed that public testing for the service will begin in...
