Xiaomi patents dual-sided smartphones with wraparound displays

A new patent has been recently published by the WIPO (World Intellectual Property Office) for two new Xiaomi smartphones. The folks over at LetsGoDigital have created mockup renders of the patents outlined in the patent submission. There are two devices in the patent, both dual-sided smartphones with screens that wrap-around in different directions. The first one is a wrap-around screen akin to the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha Concept phone. The main difference with that one is that the Mi Mix Alpha wraps around both vertical edges while the patent shows only one side that wrap around. The layout...

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip to have a 3,300 mAh battery, ultra thin glass and plastic on the screen

More details are leaking today about the Galaxy Z Flip, Samsung's second foldable smartphone, that is expected to make its debut next month alongside the Galaxy S20 family. The phone, previously thought to be called Galaxy Bloom or Galaxy Fold 2, will reportedly come with a 3,300 mAh battery. That's definitely unimpressive, but it is bigger than what Motorola could fit into its reimagined foldable Razr with its disappointing 2,510 mAh cell. With that capacity, the Galaxy Z Flip at least has the potential to make it through one day of use that isn't very heavy, and the rumored fast...

Huawei P40 Pro might have a quad-curved display with no notch, 52MP main camera

While we've seen a barrage of rumors about Samsung's upcoming Galaxy S20 family recently, let's not forget that Huawei is also working on its next flagship devices. Of those, the P40 Pro is allegedly going to ditch its predecessor's notch, instead sporting a pill-shaped punch hole in its display. Speaking of the screen, this will be more curved on the sides than the P30 Pro's, and will also slightly curve at the top and bottom. This was already hinted at in previously leaked CAD-based renders of the phone. Size-wise, it's expected to be very similar to the P30 Pro. The image below...

New Xiaomi patent shows pop-up camera design with up to 7 sensors

Patent filings are an interesting gateway to see what smartphone manufacturers are experimenting with behind closed doors. The latest one we've come across is from Xiaomi and was recently authorized by CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Administration), giving us a new take on the pop-up camera design. The design in question places both the front and back-facing cameras on the same pop-up mechanism. Xiaomi multiple punch hole cameras patent The patent reveals three distinct varieties of the design starting with two dual-camera setups on the front and back and going...

Huawei launches P30 Lite New Edition

Since Huawei isn't allowed to certify any new devices in relation to the ban imposed by the US government, the company is looking for ways to stay fresh in the mind of the consumer and one if them is to re-badge current smartphones from the company and add some incremental changes to the hardware. And this is exactly the case with the newly announced P30 Lite New Edition. It's basically the same P30 Lite smartphone launched a year ago but with bumps up the memory and storage. The P30 Lite New Edition can now go up to 6GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage as opposed to the maximum...

Realme X50 5G is heading to Russia next

The Realme X50 5G will launch in Russia soon. The exact details for the release date and price are yet to be unveiled, however. Last year, the country's leading carrier, MTS, launched its 5G network with coverage in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The carrier uses Huawei equipment and supports both the mmWave and sub-6GHz standards. The Realme X50 5G is powered by the Snapdragon 765G chipset and supports only sub-6GHz 5G. That's going to limit its carrier support, for example Tele2 (in partnership with Ericsson) launched a mmWave network in Moscow. Source (in Russian)

MediaTek unveils Helio G70 chipset for entry-level gaming phones

MediaTek unveiled a new gaming-oriented chipset for entry-level phones (and possibly some of the more affordable mid-rangers). The MediaTek Helio G70 is built on the same 12nm process as the G90 but scales back on the computational resources. The chip houses two Cortex-A75 cores at 2GHz, plus six A55 cores. The Helio G90 has a similar setup, though it uses newer A76 cores, which are faster at the same clock speed than the A75. Only eMMC 5.1 is supported, meaning phones with the G70 will not have fast UFS storage. Heading over to the graphics department, the chip features Mali-G52 2EEMC2...

The assistant will be able to control various car functions, anything from the multimedia to navigation. LG and Cerence will provide a pre-packaged...

With less than a month to go before Samsung's big February 11 Unpacked event where we'll see the next flagship series, rumors are starting to form a more solid picture. It's more or less certain that we're getting a 6.2-inch Galaxy S20, 6.7-inch S20+ and a 6.9-inch S20 Ultra this time around and Samsung is reportedly ready to ditch its 60Hz refresh rate displays and make the jump to 120Hz. The only available options would be FHD at 60Hz, QHD+ at...

AirPods Pro's latest firmware update improves sound accuracy, messes up the ANC

The AirPods Pro received a firmware update shortly after the release on December 16 but a number of users complained about worse noise cancellation. While some suspected it might be a subjective thing the folks over at Rtings updated their review and confirmed the worsened noise-canceling capabilities. More specifically, the AirPods Pro show a significant drop in isolation in the bass-range, meaning they won't be able to block the sound from the engine of an airplane as well as before, for example. Which is probably the most common use case of these earbuds. However, the review also...
