Oppo F9 teased with Essential-like notch

Oppo launched the Find X back in June and now is back to business as usual with its other devices. The F-series is selfie-driven, since the Oppo F5 arrived with 20 MP front snapper, while the Oppo F7 upgraded to 25 MP, embedded in the cutout on top. According to Oppo Malaysia, the successor will be called Oppo F9 and the phone is already being prepared for a launch in August with an even smaller notch. The image was posted by the Malaysian division on its official Twitter page and said it will have "waterdrop screen". The message, accompanying the photo also raised some deep...

Sunday debate: Which camera is more important - front or back?

If you are facing a choice between two evenly matched phones, where one has a superior rear camera and the other has a better selfie snapper which way would you go? Chip and Yordan discuss. Yordan: We can't have nice things because of selfie cameras It was probably 2004 or 2005 when I was thinking: "Phones with front-facing cameras are so hot right now". They painted a futuristic picture where video calls were a daily thing. Oh how silly was I back then. Video calling today surely is popular, but it is not the glamorous feature Isaac Azimov once pictured. It is just a...

As we scratch off another week from the calendar we're starting to feel the rapid approach of the H2 flagships. First of those will be the Samsung Galaxy Note9, which is scheduled to arrive on August 9, in just two weeks! This week we saw the Galaxy Note9 pictured in Coral Blue and Samsung teased its battery life, performance and ample storage. We had some actual announcements too - the Xiaomi Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite. Both bring decent specs and stock Android software, and are going to be available globally at superb prices. Sony introduced the 48MP IMX586 - the highest-megapixel...

Top 10 trending phones of week 30

The turbulent times in our Top 10 trending chart continue and no phone can feel safe for its spot. Just take last week's leader - the Oppo Find X, which is now all the way down in fifth. The third new leader in as many weeks is the Xiaomi Mi A2, which took advantage of its official debut to become the most popular device in our database, ahead of its Redmi Note 5 Pro stablemate. The podium is completed by the Nokia X6, which will be known as Nokia 6.1 Plus in international markets. The Samsung Galaxy J8 has held onto its fourth position, while the Mi A2 Lite, which also made its...

Weekly poll: Xiaomi Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite, are they everything you hoped?

The specs were known months ago - the Xiaomi Mi A2 and the Mi A2 Lite have essentially the same hardware as two MIUI-running Xiaomis except with Android One. Still, did this week's unveiling make you excited or did you feel a tinge of disappointment? The Mi A2 upped the screen size compared to its predecessor, has an up-to-date chipset with plenty of oomph, adds an option with more RAM and storage. So far, so good. But it lost the telephoto camera, the microSD card slot and the headphone jack. And it costs more to boot - the Mi A1 launched at around €200, the Mi A2 starts at €250....

2018 iPhones: Everything we know so far

Last September Apple crossed the Rubicon, the iPhone X introducing a new design direction for the company's smartphones. Apple's next generation of biometric security, Face ID allowed Apple to retire the Home Button and move towards its vision to create an iPhone that is entirely screen. Offsetting the loss of the Home Button, a new set of navigational gestures were introduced, which according to Jonathan Ive, is how we will interact with our iPhones for the next ten years. While the iPhone X struck off in a new direction, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus refined and polished the...
