Nougat roll out for Asus Zenfone 3 has resumed

Back in January this year, shortly after launching it, Asus suspended the ZenFone 3 Android Nougat update rollout due to some bugs. Looks like all the issues have been ironed out as the roll out has now resumed. The update is for ZE552KL and ZE520KL models, and brings along Android version 7.0. Other changes include addition of bundled notifications switch, improved touch performance, and removal of Asus Share Link. Users should at-least have 1.5GB free storage on their device before starting the software update. For more information, head to the Source links below. Source 1 2 |...

As expected, BB Merah Putih - which holds the license for making, marketing, and selling BlackBerry-branded smartphones in Indonesia - has officially announced the BlackBerry Aurora. Specs-wise, the handset is powered by Snapdragon 425 chipset and sports a 5.5-inch 720p touchscreen. It comes with 4GB RAM and 32GB internal memory. The camera...

Google Assistant fully rolling out to non-Pixel devices

Google Assistant is ultimately the successor of Google Now, and the assistant's transition has taken a while. Debuting on Google Allo, then making its way to the Google Pixel with Android Nougat, and more recently, though slowly, making its way to more non-Pixel/Nexus devices. The initial rollout began over a week ago. Droid-Life reports that it has received an influx of notifications and messages on various social media with happy readers reporting that Google has flipped the switch for Google Assistant on non-Pixel devices. In fact, the rollout is in full effect. We summoned...

T-Mobile's throttling threshold raised to 30GB per billing cycle

Every US carrier has a threshold for customers on unlimited data plans. Usually, the threshold is around 22GB within a single billing period. What this means is once you hit the threshold, your data session will be set to a lower priority than others who are on tired-data plans, or to those who haven't yet reached the threshold. T-Mobile's deprioritization threshold has been 28GB in the fine print of its unlimited data plans for some time now. T-Mobile has quietly updated this threshold to 30GB within a single billing cycle. This section of text can be found in the company's "About" page...

BlackBerry Aurora will be unveiled tomorrow in Indonesia, out on March 16

TCL may hold the license for making BlackBerry-branded smartphones to be sold in most of the world, but some markets are excepted. One of those is Indonesia, where local company BB Merah Putih will be developing, marketing, and selling its own BlackBerry-branded phones. The first one of those is called Aurora, and we've already seen it leaked in a press render not long ago. BB Merah Putih is making the Aurora official at an event tomorrow, ahead of the handset's shipping date of March 16. If you're in Indonesia you can already order one from retailers such as Dinomarket, and the price...

iPhone 7 and 7 Plus cases by Louis Vuitton start at $1,180 and go up to $5,500

There are some companies out there that will take an iPhone 7 or 7 Plus, cover it in gold and/or other expensive materials, and then sell it to you for a few thousand bucks. But maybe you're not into that. You want your iPhone to be pristine, yet still have more money than you know what to do with. Here's an idea, then. Louis Vuitton made some iPhone cases. They're called Eye-Trunk because the luxury fashion brand wanted a play on "i" and the fact that it used to make trunks. Or something like that. Anyway, the cheapest case costs $1,180 and the most expensive model goes for $5,500. And...

Microsoft thinks it's a good idea to put ads in your Windows 10 File Explorer

Microsoft has been trying to make the concept of ads in operating systems acceptable for a while now, using Windows 10 as its testbed. We've seen lock screen ads, notification ads telling you that Chrome is eating your battery and you should switch to Microsoft Edge, and even some weird targeted pop-up ads for Chrome users informing them about Microsoft's Personal Shopping Assistant. So by now you should have gotten used to this. That said, Microsoft is ready to take things to the next level - specifically, the Windows 10 File Explorer. That's a pretty essential app that we assume most...

Huawei P11 will probably be announced at MWC 2018, exec says

This year Huawei chose to make its flagship smartphone official at Mobile World Congress, which was a departure from what the company's done in the past few years when it favored standalone events in April. And it turns out that the 2017 P-series launch in February was no one-off accident. In fact, the company plans on doing the exact same thing for the P10's successor next year. So expect the Huawei P11 to "probably" become official at Mobile World Congress 2018. Or rather, if it once again goes the pre-MWC route, on the Sunday before MWC 2018 starts. The information comes from Bruce Lee,...

HTC U Ultra can now be yours for $635.99, $113 off the usual price

If you're interested in the HTC U Ultra, then you can buy one from the company's own online store for the US. In that case, you need to pay $749 for an unlocked unit, and shipping has just started earlier today. But if you want to save a decent chunk of cash you'll go the eBay route. One seller over there, with a whopping 99.9% positive feedback, is currently offering the phablet for just $635.99. That's $113 less than the official price, and you can even pick from multiple colors: black, pink, and white (blue is currently out of stock). The device is obviously unlocked, and it even...

Meizu M5s review: Shiny armor, rusty ammo

Meizu M5s might be coming late to the series, but the phone has a certain charm worthy of our attention. The M5s is akin to the M5 in lots of ways, but the choice of materials and chipset are not among those.

Samsung Gear S3 Frontier gets an update

Samsung suits its smart watches with in-house Tizen OS, instead of relying on Android Wear. The latest and mightiest of all wearables by the Korean company is the Gear S3 Frontier, and as the leading device, it is also the pioneer when we're talking about firmware updates. The SM-R765 model (the one with LTE) got another upgrade today. It is mostly bug fixes but also includes an unknown new feature called 'Jansky Wearable'. We still don't know if this is a Watch Face or something you can do with the watch, but hopefully an early adopter will be able to fill us in. The Gear S3...

Oppo F3 Plus specs leak online

After a few street ads in the Philippines and an official press invite, we are now pretty certain Oppo is preparing to launch the F3 and F3 Plus pair on March 23. From the looks of things, it is almost certain that Oppo is rising up to the dual-selfie challenge, set by vivo, with the V5 Plus family. Now there is yet another piece of information to back this theory up and it comes in the shape of an alleged specs sheet for the Oppo F3 Plus. If the leaked shot is to be believed, the F3 Plus will have a dual selfie setup, featuring a 16MP sensor and an 8MP one. The rest of the...

Samsung Galaxy S8 listed for pre-order in the UK at £799

The Samsung Galaxy S8 is a few weeks away from announcement, not to mention a month and a half from being available, but UK retailer MobileFun is already taking pre-orders. Putting aside all the rush, it's the price of the handset that we find most intriguing here. The number is £799, and for that you'd be getting a 64GB version of the smaller, 5.8-inch, non-Plus model. That's a pretty hefty sum, especially when you think of the Galaxy S7's price at launch, which was £549. Even the S7 edge was a much easier to swallow £639 a year ago. For those that can't afford an S8, deals are...

Apple rakes in 79.2% of smartphone profits in 2016

The 2016 saw plenty of hot smartphone announcements, but there was only one winner in the race for profits and it is Apple. The US company grabs the lion's share of the total operating profits - $44.9 billion out of $53.7 billion total globally. Apple made its first waterproof phone and hiked up the price of it and apparently this trick worked. It made $44.9 billion in operating profit - well ahead of the second-placed Samsung with $8.3 billion. The Koreans' numbers would certainly be bigger but the Galaxy Note7 cause a major dent. Top 5 is completed by three Chinese companies -...

ZTE to pay $892M fine for violating the US trade sanctions

ZTE is about to feel the heavy boot of the US Department of Justice after it violated the trade sanctions against Iran and North Korea. The Chinese company imported smartphones with Qualcomm chipsets for years, including during the ongoing investigation. For this offense the company has to pay $892 million fine with $300 million to be paid if the agreement with the DOJ is violated, totaling to $1.19 billion. ZTE Axon 7 - one of the phones, sold in Iran The US trade sanctions against Iran and North Korea are some of the oldest embargoes the USA has against other countries because...

The 4K HDR screen of the Xperia XZ Premium explained by the Bravia team

Just a couple of weeks ago, Sony introduced the Xperia XZ Premium - the first phone ever to pack a 4K HDR screen. But we've seen 4K screens before (the Z5 Premium), what makes 4K HDR so special? Sony turned to its Bravia team to answer that burning question. The key advantage is that HDR screens can render a wider range of light and color. This means higher contrast, but also smoother color gradients. The end result is much more immersive than the previous standard, which hadn't moved much past the SD TV days in terms of contrast and color. You may think that availability of 4K HDR...

Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge $100 off, come with free memory card

Samsung Galaxy S7 is about to be replaced as Korean company's flagship but this might be a great time to get a good deal on it. Samsung is giving a $100 price reduction and throwing in a 64/128 GB memory card as a gift too. The Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge are on some sort of clearance on Samsung's website. Both devices are $100 off, and there is a memory card as a gift in the bundle. The Galaxy S7 is $572 for the Verizon edition, $549.99 for the AT&T one and the unlocked device is $569.99. If you decide to buy any of these phones, you also get a free 64 GB memory card. The...

BlackBerry publishes March Security Update for its Androids

This indicates that issues are patched no later than a month after being discovered. The update is rolling out to the Priv, DTEK60 and DTEK50. After the update, the security patch level should read "March 5, 2017." If you haven't gotten the notification yet, you can check manually. Oppo's next Selfie Expert to be unveiled on March 23

Billboards for the unannounced Oppo F3 and F3 Plus were spotted in the Philippines a couple of days ago, and sure enough, the company's local branch has sent out invites to the press in the country for a launch event. It is to be held on March 23, and while the F3 and F3 Plus aren't explicitly mentioned, it's only logical that they will be the stars of the show. Being the next Selfie Experts - a marketing slogan Oppo used for the original F1, the F3 and F3 Plus will up their selfie game by packing a dual front camera. Or maybe just the Plus, who knows. Oppo's cousin company vivo...

The LeEco Le Pro3 Elite goes official

LeEco has been keeping a rather low profile lately, likely due to some suggested financial trouble. However, despite the lack of any official news from the Chinese manufacturer, its activities have been the subject of a few leaks, mostly dealing with upcoming new dual-camera models. Well, the silence is now officially broken with today's unveiling of the LeEco Le Pro3 Elite. Like the name suggests, the new offer is a variant of last year's Le Pro3. However, the "Elite" title is a little confusing, since there is nothing really better about the new phone. Quite the opposite. The...

Xiaomi Mi Mix 18K price drops to $700

Xiaomi Mi Mix left most of the mobile world speechless with its bezelless screen, or as Xiaomi calls it - Edgeless display. And it now appears that Xiaomi is finally catching up with demand as the price of its most expensive edition has starting dropping and reached $700 instead of the usual $800. Xiaomi Mi Mix 18K has a 6.4" screen and is powered by Snapdragon 821. It packs 6 GB RAM, 256 GB storage and 18K gold rims around the camera and the fingerprint sensor. Earlier rumors suggested that the a Mi Mix successor might be on the way with even slimmer bezels and dual-curved AMOLED...

State of Android update: Nougat gains, Lollipop still on top

Android Nougat has more than doubled its market share since last month - unfortunately, that still means it's below 3% for v7.0 and v7.1 combined. The MWC saw many Nougat-powered devices, so expect v7.x to pick up speed thanks to affordable but capable devices like the Nokia 6, 5 and 3 and the Moto G5 and Plus. Surprisingly, Marshmallow also gained ground, it went up from 30.7% to 31.3%. That goes to show that Androids are still being sold with the penultimate major version. Marshmallow is now within 1 percentage point of Lollipop, which remains the most popular release. We guess...

vivo Xplay6 gets 8X digital zoom with new update

The update brings along Android security fixes as well as several other changes, including support for 8X digital zoom. The update also brings along performance-related improvements as well as usual bug-fixes. Given that the roll out has just begun, it might take some time before the update notification pops up on your device's screen. Meanwhile, if you feel impatient, you can manually check for the update by heading to your handset's Settings menu. Via 1 2

Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ pricing revealed, Violet model appears

We've seen rumors from Roland Quandt in the past and they've been quite reliable for the most part. Today, @rquandt tweets of EU pricing for the Galaxy S8 and S8+ due to be announced at the end of the month. Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+ will be out in Black, Silver and Violet (!) colors, retail listings show. S8 priced at 799, S8+ at 899 Euro.— Roland Quandt (@rquandt) March 7, 2017 The Galaxy S8 will allegedly start at €800 ($845) while the larger-screened Galaxy S8+ will be starting at €899 ($950). This means the duo will be more expensive than the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge at...

Some bug-fixes as well as stability and performance-related changes are also said to be there, although exact details aren't available. The phone was made official back in January this year, with China becoming the first country where it went on sale. Recently, Hong Kong became the first market outside of China to get the handset. Via
