Qualcomm announces 3D Sonic Sensor Generation 2, compatible with foldables

Today, Qualcomm announces its second-generation in-display fingerprint sensor called its 3D Sonic Gen 2. Unlike many other optical in-display fingerprint solutions, Qualcomm’s remains ultrasonic, meaning that it uses sound waves to scan for 3D features in a user’s fingerprint. The first generation of Qualcomm’s 3D Sonic Sensor was featured on Samsung’s Galaxy S10, Note10, S20, and Note20 series and its performance and dependability were often questionable. Accuracy and speed were not up to par with other optical in-display solutions from Chinese OEMs like OnePlus and Huawei, many of which...

Microsoft’s got a refreshed Surface Pro 7 Plus coming soon to enterprise and education customers. It looks exactly like the Surface Pro 7, down to the dimensions, display panel, and placement of the ports, but with some notable changes on the spec sheet. The display is the same 12.3-inch PixelSense display and you still get the single USB-C port + USB-A port + 3.5mm headphone jack, and Surface Connect port. The battery life is now rated for 15 hours of mixed use (the Surface Pro 7 was rated at 10.5 hours) thanks to a larger 50.4Wh battery (versus the 7 Pro’s 46.5 Wh one) and the...

Roborock S7 comes with improved mopping, familiar design

Xiaomi-backed Roborock announced its latest robot vacuum at CES today called the Roborock S7. The big new change is in the mopping department with Sonic Mopping. The new mop vibrates at 50Hz frequency up to 3,000 times per minute allowing it to scrub floor surfaces and not just glide over them like past models. It should fare much better with dried stains and hard to clean surfaces. The mop can also lift itself by 5mm when it finishes its cleaning to prevent dirty streaks on the floor. Another new addition is the all rubber bristle-less brush. Ultrasonic carpet recognition can...

Samsung's Galaxy Upcycling program proposes to turn old phones into tools for the home

Samsung started the Galaxy Upcycling program back in 2017. The goal is to reuse old smartphones in new and creative ways – from building an arcade machine to an automatic pet feeder (you can see some examples here). But those were created by tinkerers who know how to hold a soldering iron. This year, the Galaxy Upcycling program is taking a simpler approach – just flash the old phone with new software. The video below shows two examples. The first transforms the phone into a baby monitor that can detect when the child is crying and instantly send you a notification. Another will...

LG announces details of its 2021 OLED TV lineup

Among these, the G1 will feature LG's next generation OLED panel called OLED evo. LG claims this new panel is capable of higher brightness levels, something OLED has always struggled with. The G1 will be available in 55, 65, and 77-inch sizes. The C1 will likely be the next popular model in LG's lineup after the...

A fix for the Bluetooth issues of M1-powered Macs is reportedly on the way

Apple’s M1-powered Macs show impressive speed and enviable power efficiency, but they are not without teething issues – users started reporting that Bluetooth connections were dropping out intermittently or disconnecting altogether soon after launch. This affected Apple products like AirPods and Magic Mice as well as third-party gadgets. The Atlantic writer Ian Bogost tweeted earlier today that Apple has started working on a fix. It’s not clear when said fix will arrive, however. macOS 11.2 is currently out as a Public Beta, and no one has reported that it has resolved the connectivity...

LG teases a rollable display phone at CES 2021

It's well-known that LG has been working on a rollable smartphone for some time now so we are excited to see the company teasing its future product during this year's CES 2021. Unfortunately, though, we didn't get lot of details. In fact, there's hardly any info, but it's probably safe to assume that it will be revealed later this year. We can look back at previous leaks to get an idea of how the LG Rollable will work. Oh, and that last rumor seems to be busted given that LG kind of confirmed the name "Rollable". We also expect TCL to come out with a finished product with rollable...

65W USB-C charger for Samsung photographed

This Samsung 65W charger (EP-TA865) was certified by the Korean authorities back in September, but this is the first time we see in a photo. It supports USB Power Delivery at up to 20V and 3.25A, including Programmable Power Supply (PPS). It’s powerful enough to be used with laptops as well, provided they can be charged through their USB-C ports. But it’s probably too overpowered for the Galaxy S21 flagships that will be unveiled this Thursday – the S21 Ultra is rumored to support 45W charging, the highest Samsung has gone yet (using the EP-TA845 adapter). The Samsung Galaxy S21 and...
