While Samsung has already pushed out the October security update to the Galaxy Note8, not every region has been lucky. Specifically, countries where the international variant (SM-N950F) was sold have been waiting for quite some time now - the model's security level is still stuck at August. Officially, there's still no information on when this model would get the next security update, but a new report suggests that's likely to happen soon. The report notes a new security update will start hitting SM-N950F units sometime next week. The update could be for the month of October or...

Assistant's music recognition feature rolling out to non-Google devices as well
Google has confirmed that the Assistant's ability to recognize music/songs being played around users has started rolling out to non-Google devices as well. The feature - which works like Shazam or SoundHound - was only available on Pixel 2 phones until now. Reports confirm the functionality now works on devices by other manufacturers like OnePlus and Nextbit. Following screenshots - taken from a OnePlus 5 unit - confirms this: In case the Assistant app on your device isn't recognizing music yet, it's likely because the update hasn't reached your device. Google says the rollout began...
Google's smart file manager app accidentally leaks
Google has been working quietly on an in-house file manager. Development of such an app has not been known to the public, until today, that is. A new app called "Files Go" has accidentally been posted to the Google Play Store long enough for someone to re-upload it to a file-sharing website. As of right now, the direct Play Store link doesn't lead anywhere, only offering a "Not found" page. We installed the app from the mirror link and poked around. There are a few useful features that appear to be aimed at giving you more information and control over what is taking up precious space on...
November security update fixes Pixel 2 clicking noise issue, brings new Saturated color mode
While we already know the November security update for Nexuses and Pixels has started rolling out, Google has now confirmed that the update brings a couple of major Pixel 2/2 XL-related changes. In a post on official Google forums, company employee Orrin has revealed that the update not only fixes the clicking noise issue with the device, it also brings a new Saturated mode. The option can be accessed by heading to Settings->Display->Advanced->Colors. In addition, the update also includes some UI-related changes that the company says will extend the life of the OLED display....
Apple issues statement after accusations arise from Paradise Papers
If you haven't heard, the Paradise Papers is a leak similar to the Panama Papers leak of last year, one that would expose celebrities and business executives who were (reportedly) moving large amounts of money overseas in order to avoid paying taxes. The Paradise Papers is a collection of several million documents relating to offshore investments totaling $10 trillion involving 120,000 businesses and individuals dating from 1950 to 2016. Since the documents release on Sunday, multiple reports have directly accused Apple of partaking in the use of tax havens overseas, specifically in...
Google makes Android's November security update available for Nexuses and Pixels
As a new month begins, Google releases a new bunch of security fixes for Android, and makes them available to its Nexus and Pixel devices. Things are a little bit different today, however, since the company now lists a separate section in its security bulletin page that details "functional updates" for Pixels. These are the fixes that aren't related to security, and for the November release 6 out of 12 such patches are related to Bluetooth. There are a couple of camera improvements baked in too, an audio fix, two mobile data-related enhancements, and a vague "improved application stability"...
DisplayMate publishes results of iPhone X testing
DisplayMate has published its results of testing the iPhone X display and has called it the best smartphone display on the market. The company specializes in making professional grade software for display calibration and also routinely publishes test results for popular devices on the market for the benefit of consumers, journalists and manufacturers. Over the years Apple has had some of the highest rated displays on the market but it was usually Samsung who took the cake in terms of having the best smartphone display on the market in that particular year. This year, Apple has...

Following many weeks of leaks, rumors, and speculation, today OnePlus has finally revealed when it's announcing its next smartphone. The grand unveiling of the OnePlus 5T will take place in Brooklyn on November 16 at 11 AM local time (4PM GMT). The date has already been leaked and the company itself teased New York City as the location, but it's good to have the official confirmation. The event will be livestreamed across the world, of course. If you want to be there when it happens, you'll have the chance to buy a ticket to attend. These will go on sale through a special page on the...
Huawei Honor V10 to bring the power of Mate 10 at a fraction of the price
The Mate 10 duo sits at the top of Huawei's spec sheets and price lists, but a the "value for money" leader may still be hiding in the shadows - the Huawei Honor V10 aka Honor 9 Pro. All we have for now are early drips of information from TENAA, but they sure taste sweet. It will have a 6" screen with 18:9 aspect ratio, matching the Mate 10 Pro. The panel will be sourced from BOE, a Chinese manufacturer that Apple is also considering for its future OLED screens. You also get the full power of a Kirin 970 chipset with 6GB of RAM and Android 8.0 Oreo (EMUI 8.0). With ample storage too,...
Broadcom offers to acquire Qualcomm for $130 billion
We often mention Qualcomm in relation to its Snapdragon chipsets, but the company is also one of the biggest providers of modems. The tech giant might soon find itself under new ownership in a suitably massive deal - a $130 billion acquisition by Broadcom. The offer is for $70 a share - a 33% premium at the time, though QCOM shares shot up since then. This would be the largest tech acquisition ever and would instantly make the new company the global #3 (behind Intel and Samsung). Broadcom, Qualcomm and NXP will have yearly revenues for 2017 of $51 billion and EBITDA of around $23...
Testing iPhone X's tele camera in the dark (even though Apple disables it)
The iPhone X is the pinnacle of Apple's cameraphones. It improves on the iPhone 8 Plus camera with a superior telephoto module, which has an additional OIS system and a brighter lens (f/2.4 vs. f/2.8). As you may know, the telephoto cameras of both the iPhone 7 Plus and 8 Plus are disabled in the dark. Instead, 2x zoom is achieved by cropping and then upscaling the image from the wide camera, leading to a soft image with less than expected detail. So you'd think with the iPhone X's two improvements that benefit the low-light performance, this restriction will finally be lifted. But alas...
Xiaomi on set for a new record with over 70M shipments
We already knew that Xiaomi reached 10 million shipments in October alone. Another confirmation came from Donovan Sung, who held press conference in Beijing, saying that Xiaomi is about to beat its 71 million shipments record from 2015. In front of journalists at a new Mi Home store launch, the Xiaomi CEO said that 70 million shipments were reached in the first 10 months of 2017. With November and December to go, the Chinese company is destined for a new record, especially with the 11/11 sale next week. The company expects to ship 90 million phones, as previously stated. It was...
Xiaomi Mi Note 3 gets new Kris Wu Limited Edition variant
Xiaomi has outed a new variant for its Mi Note 3 smartphone. Dedicated to singer Kris Wu's (a.k.a Wu Yifan) it comes to mark his 27th birthday. The changes brought by the limited edition are entirely cosmetic. The model comes with the name of the singer printed on its back, but the internals and pricing remain the same. The variant is available for purchase in China. Via
Drop tests show the iPhone X is more fragile than the iPhone 8
Breaking the screen of your iPhone X will cost you $279 to repair. But if you take Apple at its word that it used the "most durable glass ever in a smartphone, front and back" then it's unlikely you'll ever need to pay for repairs. Except reality shatters this illusion, if you'll pardon the pun. SquareTrade specializes in selling extended warranty for gadgets, so its team puts them through rigorous tests to determine the risk of damage. The scores show increased risk due to all the glass on current-gen iPhones, but the X is especially susceptible. The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus scored 67 and...
Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro teardown shows very similar internals
The Huawei Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro share many of their features so it's not surprising to see a common design on the inside. The vanilla phone seems to a rubber gasket on the back cover, which should offer a solid level of water resistance, but the phone is rated only for IP54. There seems to be a rubber ring around the USB-C port, even the card tray has one. Huawei Mate 10 teardown Compare that to the Huawei Mate 10 Pro. You can clearly see the rubber ring around the USB-C port on the bottom and the card tray (there's no headphone jack). It's not entirely clear what...
Samsung ridicules Apple fanboys in latest Galaxy Note8 ad
It's been a while since we got a bit of bickering between phone manufacturers, but Samsung's latest video ad comes to fill in that void. The "Upgrade to Galaxy" clip goes through ten years of iPhone ownership, pointing out many features that the Apple flagships lacked, compared to their Samsung rivals. Screengrabs from the Samsung ad Some of the features that Samsung implemented way before Apple are the water resistance and wireless charging, seen first in the Samsung Galaxy S4 back in 2013. Big screens were part of the Galaxy portfolio with the launch of the Note series way...
Samsung Galaxy J2 Pro (2017) with removable battery coming soon
Samsung looks all set to update its Galaxy J series of phones with a new device. The SM-J250F - which is allegedly the 2017 variant of the Galaxy J2 Pro - has cleared the US FCC and the Bluetooth SIG. Sadly, not much is currently known about the device on the specifications front, except that it will feature a removable battery, which is a real rarity these days. Via | Bluetooth SIG
Samsung Galaxy Note9 project is codenamed Crown
After the Galaxy Note7 debacle, the Galaxy Note8 was one of the biggest tests Samsung ever faced in recent times. Now that the device has been launched, it's safe to say that the company passed it with flying colors). And, as is usually the case, the focus now shifts on next-gen device. While there have already been some related rumors, a latest report is suggesting the next-gen Galaxy Note device - likely to be called Note9 - is internally code-named Crown. Samsung Galaxy Note8 The report comes from the tech giant's home country of South Korea, and cites local news publications...

The Nokia 5 was launched back in July this year, but has only been available in 2GB RAM option all this while. Well, that changes now, as a new 3GB RAM variant of the device is being launched. The new variant - in Matte Black and Tempered Blue colors - will be available in India, where retailer Flipkart will start offering it tonight.
