Deal: Grab an LG G6 for $288 in US

For those in the US who are planning to purchase the LG G6, you'll be glad to know that Best Buy is currently running a promo where-in the device is being offered for $11.99/month. The model on offer is the Verizon variant. You'll have to pay the monthly amount for 24 months, which translates into around $288 in total. That's down from $28/month, which totals $672. For comparison, Verizon is officially selling the phone for $20 a month (for 2 years), which is $480 in total. Coming back to the Best Buy deal, available color options include black and platinum. No information on when...

Study from Stanford shows wearables aren't accurate counting calories

As more and more folks adopt the use of smart wearables for tracking steps, heart rate, sleep, and calories burned, Stanford University performed a study to measure exactly how accurate the data collected from these wearables actually is. The study involved seven different wearables (Apple Watch, Basis Peak, Fitbit Surge, Microsoft Band, Mio Alpha 2, PulseOn, and the Samsung Gear S2) and 60 volunteers of different ages, skin color, and body mass index. The basis of the study is to use medical equipment to measure actual calorie usage by metering the heartrate and carbon dioxide...

Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime and J7 Prime now available in 32GB storage options in India

The Samsung Galaxy J5 Prime and J7 Prime smartphones have only been available in 16GB storage options in India. However, that was until now, as the South Korean company has started selling 32GB variants as well. Both variants are listed on the tech giant's official India website. Although the listings aren't accessible currently (the site is throwing a 'Forbidden' error at the moment), reports say the 32GB J5 Prime carries a price tag of INR 14,900 (around $230), while the J7 Prime with 32GB storage will set you back INR 16,900 (around $260). Available color options include black...

T-Mobile Digits goes out of beta on May 31, makes phone numbers flexible

Back in December T-Mobile unveiled Digits, a revolutionary new service that's meant to "bring the phone number into the digital age". It's been in beta testing ever since, and today the Un-carrier has announced that it will go live for all of its customers on May 31. So what can Digits do for you? Well, it lets you assign multiple phone numbers to the same device. So you no longer have to carry two phones around, one for work, one for personal use. Or you can use Digits to have the same phone number ring multiple devices - your phone, your tablet, another phone, a smartwatch, a PC - the...

Lenovo will never phase out its own brand in the mobile space

Last November an intriguing report surfaced claiming that Lenovo would give up on using its own brand for smartphones. Instead, it would only sell Moto-branded devices starting at some point in the future. This move was said to coincide with the company's reorganization of its activities in China. Today however this has been denied by none other than Lenovo CEO Yang Yuanqing. He told reporters that the reorganization will not affect its mobile business on the mainland. Despite a widening loss for its mobile division, the company is intent on moving forward with the same dual-brand strategy...

Moto 360 (2nd gen) is starting to receive Android Wear 2.0 update today

Motorola has promised to finally deliver the update to Android Wear 2.0 to its Moto 360 (2nd gen) smartwatches by the end of this month. And here we are, rapidly approaching said deadline. The good news is that Motorola has revealed that the update is going to start hitting its smartwatches today. The bad news is that this is going to be one of those infamous phased rollouts, so there's no telling when every single Moto 360 (2nd gen) unit will finally receive it. So if you own one of these watches, know you're in the home stretch now. Or rather, the update is. You just need to be a little...

Samsung Galaxy Note8 front panel leaks, maybe

At this point we're unfortunately not close enough to the launch of Samsung's Galaxy Note8 so that we get a steady supply of reliable-looking (and sounding) leaks. In fact, we're still in sketchy rumor territory. And the latest such revelation, which in no way should be taken for granted, comes (as always) from China. What you see in the very quick, rather blurry video below is implied to be the front panel for the upcoming Note8 phablet. Is it, though? It's impossible to tell right now. Sure, it could be that, but it could also be a screen protector for the Note8. Or, because we...

Instagram Direct finally adds support for landscape and portrait images, link previews

Instagram's feature addition train isn't stopping anytime soon. Just two days ago the Facebook-owned service added new stuff into its Stories section that was 'inspired' by Snapchat's, and now we've got some new news to talk about. Instagram Direct, the part of the service that lets you talk directly to other users, is finally getting a couple of much-needed features. First off, when you share a photo in Direct, you no longer need to crop it if it's in portrait or landscape (so basically, anything but a square). That's because Direct will now show your images exactly in their native...

Moto Z2 Play runs GFXBench, has its specs confirmed once more

After already having been certified by China's TENAA, the upcoming Moto Z2 Play thought it would be wise to have a go at GFXBench. As such, the phone's most important specs have been outed once more, basically confirming what the TENAA listing has already told us. While GFXBench's info screen doesn't list battery capacity, it's important to note that Lenovo itself (Motorola's owner) has confirmed that the Z2 Play will come with a 3,000 mAh cell. That's down from the 3,510 mAh unit inside its predecessor, the Z Play, which was widely hailed as one of the champions of battery life in 2016....

Huawei nova 2 stars in blurry hands-on video ahead of its announcement tomorrow

Tomorrow, Huawei is holding an event in China during which it will make the nova 2 smartphone official. This successor to the original nova from last year has been the subject of many leaks recently, as well as a teaser campaign put forth by Huawei. And now, as we enter the last few hours before the announcement, someone has recorded a blurry ten-second hands-on video showing the blue Huawei nova 2. You can see the most relevant captures below, if you don't mind their low quality. This once again confirms the design of the nova 2, which is quite a departure from what we've seen in...

Kodak Ektra camera-centric smartphone is finally out in the US, cheaper than expected

A Kodak-branded smartphone called Ektra became official last October, and it went on sale in Europe in December. We've been expecting it to hit the US and Canada in April, but its launch over there got a bit delayed. It is however now available to purchase in the US, in unlocked form, straight from the Kodak website. The good (or even better) news is that the initially announced $549 price tag has somehow transformed into a much less ludicrous $399.99. Note that it's compatible with GSM-based networks (such as AT&T and T-Mobile) only, so it won't work on Verizon or Sprint. The new...

Asus ZenPad Z8 receives Android 7.0 Nougat update

Android O could be around the corner, but some devices still have some catching up to do. Asus ZenPad Z8 runs on Android Marshmallow, but not for long - the device started getting an update to Android Nougat 7.0 and soon all customers should receive it. The software version of the update is V5.4.1 and will bring you Multi-Window mode where you can use two apps at once. Another notable Nougat feature that hits the ZenPad Z8 is the quick switch between apps that works with a double tap on the Overview/Recent Apps button. Notification settings are easily reachable with a long press on...

Andy Rubin's Essential may be unveiling its bezelless smartphone on May 30

Android co-founder Andy Rubin has been working on a new smartphone through a company called Essential. Back in January a report outed a few details about it, and then in March Rubin himself tweeted the teaser image you can see below, confirming the near-bezelless handset's existence. Today Essential has tweeted for the first time, and as you can see it's promising "something big" for May 30. Obviously we're thinking that might be the official unveiling date for that smartphone, but do keep in mind that there's a chance it will be something else entirely. Essential may be developing...

Vertu launches Signature Cobra phone worth $360k

If you find it impossible to make a call unless there is a ruby encrusted snake on the front of your phone, Vertu has just the thing for you. Part of Vertu's Signature series, the Signature Cobra has 439 rubies shaped in the form of an incredibly gaudy looking cobra that just chills on the front of the phone. The eyes are made out of emerald and there is also some gold and crystal thrown in there for good measure. The phone has been designed by French jewelry house Boucheron. As if that wasn't enough, only eight of these phones will be made and each one will be delivered to you via...

OnePlus 3T is being discontinued soon, only a few units are still available for purchase

OnePlus has already started talking about its next smartphone, the OnePlus 5. It's teased some possible color versions, and the CEO revealed what chipset will be powering it. As we inevitably get closer and closer to its unveiling, the company seems intent on focusing just on the OnePlus 5. So it's decided to retire the OnePlus 3T. There are apparently only a few units still available for purchase, so if you want a 3T you should grab one as soon as possible. OnePlus says "this is the last call" to buy the 3T "before stock runs out". When that happens, it's all over for what was one of...

New Acer Iconia Tab 10 sports a quantum dot display, four speakers and a sub-woofer

Acer unveiled the Iconia Tab 10 (A3-A50) - a tablet with a 10" quantum dot display. This tech is used by Sony in its flagship phones (but not tablets, it seems), its Triluminos TVs too. It's what Samsung calls QLED and what Philips uses it its Color IQ TVs. What's the big deal? Quantum dots sit between LCD and OLED displays. Compared to LCDs, they are brighter, have higher contrast, offer more colors and use less energy. In TVs, a quantum dot display is often paired with HDR capability, but Acer is mum on the subject. Anyway, the Iconia Tab 10 is awesome at the other half of...

Intel will open the Thunderbolt 3 standard to the public royalty-free

As a tech enthusiast, it's hard not to instantly fall in love with Intel's Thunderbolt 3 standard. Combined with the Type-C connector, it is the absolute embodiment of universal and versatile connectivity. However, current adoption is far from universal, mainly due to its proprietary nature and royalties involved - two problems that Intel is now planning to resolve. The chip manufacturer just announced its plans to offer the Thunderbolt 3 spec to third-party partners royalty-free and also embed the technology in most of its future chips. The latter sure sounds like something that...

Here at GSMArena.com we aim to bring you concise and accurate information on phone specifications. Phone pages on the desktop and mobile site will have tabs that let you switch between the various versions of that device. This functionality is available on the comparison pages as well, allowing you to, for example, compare the T-Mobile USA versions of select phones or even just compare two versions of the...

HTC has been promising a proper mobile solution for VR - first the Vive wireless upgrade kit and now a proper phone-based solution. The headset has its own displays - 3.6" big (110° field of view), with 1,080 x 1,200px resolution and capable of 90Hz refresh rate. HTC Link VR Then there's an external motion controller tracking, similar to the PS Move system (yes, the light-up lollipops). The...

Here's how Samsung customized the Galaxy S8 for the Chinese market

Samsung took its time bringing the Galaxy S8 pair to China. The flagships only arrived to the vast market last week following a spectacular unveiling event. While arguably annoying for Samsung fans, the delay becomes at least a bit easier to swallow once you learn that the Korean giant has been keeping busy tweaking UI to meet local requirements and tastes. Samsung conveniently devoted a post and detailed the differences between the Chinese and International versions. First off, the Chinese Galaxy S8 has a Samsung Assistant app and Yellow Pages, baked right into the Phone...

Today is a big day for Mi fans - the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 was launched in China. Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun presented the device that comes with the power-efficient Snapdragon 625 chipset, a massive 5300 mAh battery and improved design over the first iteration. The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 has a 6.44" display with thin bezels - not Mi Mix slim, but this is a mid-ranger after all. The chipset might count as a downgrade from the Snapdragon 650/652 that powered the first Mi Max in terms of processing power, but it's much more power-efficient. The RAM is now 4 GB with two options for internal storage...
