TSMC begins mass production of 7nm+ process for A13, Kirin 985 chipsets

TSMC has officially announced the beginning of mass production of its second-generation 7nm+ process. This is the first time the Taiwanese company is implementing EUV lithography, making a step towards being the main competitor of Intel and Samsung. According to reports from China, the company will continue supplying Huawei and the new process will be for the upcoming Kirin 985 chipset in the Mate 30. It will also be part of the Apple A13 SoC, expected to appear in the 2019 iPhones. TSMC has already made it clear that it will keep supplying Huawei with SoC, despite the trade...

Redmi Note 7 sells in 10 million units across the globe

Redmi is preparing for the launch of the so-called "flagship killer" tomorrow, but before the K20 makes the stage, the brand had another thing to celebrate. It reached 10 million sales around the world of the Redmi Note 7 series, and it managed to do it in 129 days. Xiaomi co-founder Lei Jun shared the good news on Weibo, later followed by photos sharing a celebratory cake with all the key executives of the company and its sub-brand. Lei Jun and other Xiaomi executives Jun said the milestone is a victory and a testament of "holding Xiaomi values, such as high quality and...

Oppo Reno 10x zoom in for review

Oppo says its Reno series is about "seeing the world from a completely new perspective" and the Reno 10x zoom is the de-facto flagship of the compny. If you didn't guess by now, the 10x stands for the phone's hybrid zoom capabilities but it's limited to 5x optical despite what the name implies. Another cool quirk is the motorized shark fin selfie camera which helps it stand out in the sea of pop-up and punch hole solutions but we're not quite sure of the practicality here. The Reno 10x zoom is a substantial phone with all the bells and whistles that 2019 has to offer so let's go...

Top 10 trending phones of week 21

Week 21 is sort of a transition week, as it still feels the aftermath of the series of high-profile launches from Week 20, adds a couple phones of its own as well as one that will only go official next week. The OnePlus 7 Pro was unable to retain its popularity over the week following the one of its launch, and gave the first spot back to the Samsung Galaxy A50. The Asus Zenfone 6 on the other hand kept climbing and completed the podium. Honor 20 Pro debuted on Tuesday and shot straight to the fourth spot. What makes this particularly impressive is that it was achieved despite...

A timeline of the Huawei ban: what happened so far and what to expect

Last Friday the US Commerce Department added Huawei to the "Entity List", aka the blacklist. Essentially, this meant that US companies are banned from exporting hardware and software to Huawei. The full impact of this became clear just days later. Over the weekend Google suspended Huawei's access to its services - Huawei can still use Android AOSP, but not the Play Store or other Google-run services. Existing devices devices will keep working and even receiving security updates. On Monday, the US decided to delay the ban by 90 days. A few days earlier Huawei announced that it has...

Week 21 in review: Huawei hit hard by USA-China trade war

This week politics spilled over into the world of technology quite suddenly and somewhat unexpectedly. Last week the US put Chinese Huawei on a ban list and this week we felt the consequences as Google suspended Huawei's license to use Android. Google later revoked the ban for 90 days but that still doesn't give Huawei a real way of using its Android. The issues get further complicated. A trade war encompasses a huge spectrum of businesses and the US has a huge network of partners. UK-based chip design giant ARM had to cut ties with Huawei, effectively ending the Chinese company's Kirin...

Weekly poll: are you sticking with Huawei or Honor?

Huawei is in big trouble - between losing its Android license and getting cut off by ARM, the company's smartphone business is in limbo. It is trying to fight back against the ban, but right now its future looks grim. This isn't just bad for Huawei, but for consumers too. And we don't just mean the loss of competition. If you currently have a Huawei or an Honor phone, it just lost much of its resale value. And even if you weren't planning on selling it, it won't get the next major OS upgrade, meaning you may have to get a new phone sooner. If last week you were looking to buy, say, a...
