vivo Y95 appears in hands-on photos

Two weeks ago vivo introduced the affordable Y93 smartphone, the first device with Snapdragon 439. Launched for about $215/€190, the device looks pretty impressive for its cost with a massive 4,030 mAh battery and 4 GB RAM. Now the manufacturer is about to launch a tad more expensive device, called vivo Y95. Specs look pretty similar to the vivo Y93, but there is a fingerprint scanner on the back, according to leaked photos of the phone and its retail box. vivo Y95 front and back The source says the phone will have a 6.22" screen with a tiny waterdrop notch for the 20 MP...

Xiaomi Mi Band 3 review

Intro Xiaomi celebrated its 8th birthday with the introduction of the Mi 8 flagship, MIUI 10, and the Mi Band 3 wearable. As smartphone aficionados we were glad to see a new phone with Snapdragon 845 and whatnot, but the band also kept us buzzing for few days after. Apparently the gadget was a hit at its domestic market, because when we were at the Mi Store in Shanghai two weeks later, the clerk sadly explained that all Mi Band 3 devices were sold out. Eventually the device managed to arrive at our office, so here are our impressions. Unboxing The retail package is a simple...

Google Pixel 3 XL review

The Pixel 3 XL is Google's latest flagship smartphone. It promises to bring everything we have come to expect with the Pixel brand, including a clean build of Android, fast performance, quality camera and some cool software tricks that only Google can come up with.

Top 10 trending phones of week 45

"Techtober" is over and finally see a week of relative calmness in our weekly chart of top 10 trending phones. There is some movement, of course, as the Galaxy A7 (2018) takes the first spot after ending up second best last week. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 6 Pro comes in second up from 5th last week and it's rather expected given the popularity of the lineup, especially in India. The recently launched Huawei Mate 20 Pro remains in the top three, while OnePlus' latest flagship, the 6T, falls down to 4th. Right after the OnePlus 6T comes one of its direct competitors - the Pocophone F1....

Weekly poll: Oppo RX17 Pro and RX17 Neo launch, will they reach the stars?

They've been around for a while, but they have a new name and a new market. The Oppo RX17 Pro just adds an "X" to the R17 Pro and changes nothing else. Sales in Europe start next week, so this is a good time to ask - are you getting one? At €600 it costs more than the OnePlus 6T and it's no secret that the phones are based on the same hardware. Not quite, though, the RX17 Pro has a different camera setup that includes dual aperture (f/1.5-2.4) on the main module and a third module as well - a 3D Time of Flight camera. While we would have preferred a telephoto (or ultra-wide angle)...

Counterclockwise: the wireless charging format wars

Last week we talked about obsolete cable connectors and at the end suggested that cables may go extinct altogether because of wireless data transfer and charging. This week we wanted to look into the history of the latter - wireless charging. Sometimes called inductive charging (as induction is what makes it work), this is hardly new technology - the Tesla Tower was built in 1901. Tesla believed wireless power transfer is the future. It took a while for the idea to catch on in practice, most makers were content with using exposed pogo pins to achieve much the same effect - put the...

Week 45 in review: Samsung shows off foldable phone, One UI and new notches

Last week was the last in a series of intense, hardware packed ones, whereas this one was more subdued. It lacked huge phone announcements that were weeks in the making but it did still bring a few exciting news. Chief among those was Samsung's annual developers conference (SDC 2018) which brought a glimpse of Samsung's foldable OLED smartphone, Samsung's vision for its future software, dubbed One UI and a look at Bixby and its future. Samsung also showed its concept for screen notches in its new Infinity displays - the Infinity-U and Infinity-V notches that are centered in the...
