A new Sony smartphone has been certified by the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The device carries an FCC ID of PY7-66475M. Sadly, nothing else is currently known about the handset - the listing doesn't even reveal the model number. However, given that the phone has been certified by the FCC, it's reasonable to assume the Japanese company is gearing up for its launch. And in that case, it won't be long before more details about the device surface. Source | Via

Verizon Ellipsis 10 HD tablet leaks in image
Looks like Verizon might launch a new tablet soon, as a device dubbed Ellipsis 10 HD has leaked. The leak comes courtesy of the usually reliable tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks on Twitter). Ellipsis 10 HD for Verizon http://pic.twitter.com/ZuYKrWXTrD Evan Blass (@evleaks) May 21, 2017 No points for guessing that this new tablet will be the successor to the Ellipsis 10 tablet that the carrier launched back in 2015. Sadly, nothing else is known about the device at the moment, although given its name, it'd be reasonable to assume that it will come with a better display resolution. Source

Counterclockwise: Motorola, Nokia and others invent the modern telephone
New smartphone makers seem to spring up every day, but some companies have been making communication equipment before phones were even invented. Think "telegraph"! Yep, before the Google Keyboard and swipe input, there was Morse code. Siemens & Halske was founded in 1847 to improve on that - instead of dots and dashes, the new machine used needles to point at letters. A primitive screen but still an improvement. The company's entry to the world of telephony came 150 years later - the Siemens Mobiltelefon C1 from 1985 was a car phone that worked over VHF. Siemens Mobiltelefon...
Meizu to launch a new M-series phone on May 23
We got word that the Meizu will unveil a new phone in a matter of days. Details are scarce at this point but it's clear we're talking about a device that has affordability as its main focus. Meizu is also adopting a new strategy this time around - perhaps to allow for an even cheaper price point. The device will only be available on sale through online channels and will not be available in brick-and-mortar stores. Ard Boudeling, head of Meizu's Global Marketing, had this to say, regarding the upcoming launch: "Up until 2015, we had never launched a phone below $275. Making a phone...
Week 20 in review: HTC U11 revealed, Google I/O reveals more details about the Android O
We had quite a busy week in the news department with all the announcements that happened in the past several days. HTC released its true flagship the U11 with the biggest ever DxOMark score for its camera. Google held it's annual I/O where it announced plenty of new features for the Google Assistant, Google Home, YouTube and other projects and said more about the upcoming Android O that will be accompanied by Android Go for less powerful devices. Along with the official events and launches, some unofficial rumors and leaks floated around. There was a mock-up device of the iPhone 8 that...
Weekly poll: Xiaomi Mi 6, hot or not?
The Xiaomi Mi 6 is a bit of a stealth flagship, at least in the west. That's because the company never really got a foothold in western stores and retailers, but the phone itself is so loaded with features that you may be tempted to import one (it's currently not available in the Mi.com international store). The Mi 6 joins the dual camera party with two 12MP sensors, each behind a different lens - one wide-angle (27mm) and one zoomed-in (52mm). You can check our Just-in article to see the difference in focal lengths. The 8MP selfie cam seems solid too, more on that when we publish the full...
Top 10 trending phones of week 20
The last seven days saw a healthy shake at some positions. While Galaxy S8 maintains its lead for an 8th week in a row and is still accompanied by the Redmi Note 4 and the Galaxy J7 Prime on the rostrum, three Xiaomi devices occupied the next four positions. Yes, you read that correctly. Xiaomi launched the affordable Redmi 4 in India, but this device completely isn't new. We dubbed it the Xiaomi Redmi 4X to differentiate it from the original Redmi 4 that was launched last fall in China. There are some minor improvements in the Indian device, including Bluetooth version and ever so...
Weekly poll results: 5.2" screens still most popular, interest in widescreens raises quickly
The more things change, the more they stay the same. In 2016 you voted that the best screen size is between 5" and 5.3", in 2017 the most preferred screen diagonal is still centered on 5.2". 41% of the vote settled on that option, though this year the larger option - 5.5" - came close with 28%. Things are starting to sway towards bigger screen, though this poll gives us a feeling that it will be a while before the 5-and-a-bit inch phones lose the top spot. One thing that may accelerate the shift is wide-angle screens. The 5.7" (wide aspect ratio)' option scored a respectable 16% of the...
