Week 27 in review: iPhone rumors gather traction, Mi Max 3 getting bigger

As we settle a bit after a few hectic weeks of major announcements, we can drink our Sunday coffee and look back at what shaped the news in the last seven days. There were no truly big announcements this week. Huawei introduced the Honor 10 GT with 8GB of RAM, Samsung added the On6 to its lineup in India, Asus launched an aggressively-priced ZenFone 5Z aimed at OnePlus' market. Speaking of OnePlus, it announced the Amber Red OnePlus 6. What got more attention were leaks regarding the next iPhones, Galaxy Note9 and the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 and Mi A2. A 2018 iPhone revealed it will have 4GB...

Top 10 trending phones of week 27

We have plenty of action this week - the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is back on top followed by last week's leader, the Oppo Find X. Still, this week's ranking is dominated by Samsung with some Xiaomi phones here and there. The third place goes to the Samsung Galaxy J6 - last week it was 4th, but now it has switched places with the Xiaomi Redmi 6 Pro. Samsung phones occupy the spots from 5th to 7th. The Galaxy J8 leads this particular group from the Galaxy A6+ and the Galaxy J7 Prime. The standard version of the Redmi Note 5 (also known as Redmi 5 Plus in India) has fallen two positions...

Weekly poll: what kind of dual (or triple) camera setup is best?

Alright, it's been a year since we asked, so it's time to check if opinions have changed. What kind of dual camera setup do you prefer? Or even a triple camera setup - we'll let you vote for multiple options in this poll. If there's a clear winner, then just one extra camera is enough. If there are a couple of popular options, then a triple camera is needed to cover all bases. Last year, monochrome secondary sensors won by a thin margin. They were important in boosting low-light performance, but they may not be so relevant today. Apertures have reached f/1.5 on the Galaxy S9 and S9+....

Sunday debate: In-display vs rear-mounted fingerprint scanner

With makers chasing ever increasing screen to body ratios for their flagships, there's just no room for the front-mounted fingerprint scanner of yesteryear. Where should it move though - under the screen or round the back - Rossen and George discuss. Ro: "The in-display fingerprint is the future." If it were up to me, I would have kept the fingerprint reader on the front on modern phones, but the trend of bezel-less displays is driving the fingerprints to the back of the device. The chin can no longer house them. But don't get me wrong - I enjoy those full-screen...

Weekly poll results: fingerprint readers are the prefered lock mechanism

People are not convinced by this whole "face scanning" thing - fingerprint readers are here, they work, why over-complicate things with new tech? The "fingerprint reader" option in last week's poll received over half of the votes. It's telling that the "both" option is a distant second (34% vs 56%) and "3D face scanning" by itself barely got any votes at all. Interestingly, more than a few comments mentioned iris scanners, a tech that seems to be on its way out (you can't do animoji with an iris scanner). Anyway, it seems that most people prefer the fingerprint reader for its...

Weekend phone talk: Paul

As we rush headlong into Summer, each week one of our editors will take a moment to reflect on what they thought of the year so far and look forward to what's coming up. Known for long diatribes - I'll keep this short The 2018 highs and lows I'd expected to dive straight into flagship territory, but strangely it's not where my thoughts first turned. Maybe it's because our expectations are set sky-high for flagships these days but one of the genuine surprises this year for me was the Moto G6. My gym phone/pub phone - call it what you will, has always been a Motorola, I...

Smartphone World Cup: Semi finals

The Nokia brand is regaining its popularity, but it won't win this contest. And neither will Google, LG or Xiaomi. For the final four that remain this is the last step before the grand final. Let's see the semi-finals. vivo NEX S vs. Samsung Galaxy S9+ A clash of the old and the new. The vivo NEX S brings futuristic tech that may become standard in flagship smartphones to come - a fingerprint reader under the display and a pop-up camera. The huge 6.59" Super AMOLED screen and 4,000 mAh battery with 22W fast charge and make the even more appealing. vivo NEX S • Samsung Galaxy...
