As our lives are becoming more connected, users are using more apps and apps are demanding more data, which could cost a lot for folks in emerging countries where data is relatively pricey. In order to combat this, Google has begun testing a new app called Triangle. The app allows you to view how much data you have left, see which apps are using that data, and you can even restrict data usage on a per-app basis. The app will even prompt you to temporarily enable data for an amount of time. For example, if you've blocked Google Maps from consuming any mobile data, upon opening the app,...

Samsung remains the top smartphone display maker for Q1 2017
Samsung has been the top display maker in the world the first quarter of the year, raking in $3.5 billion of revenue accounting for 27.2% of global market share for smartphone displays or displays under 9 inches. This is all according to industry firm IHS Markit, the Korea Herald reports. Sales revenue is up from Q1 2016 as the demand for more expensive curved/flexible OLED panels rose in demand over the past year. While Samsung dominated the $13 billion industry, Japan Display followed with 17.8% share of the market, with LG Display Co. and Chinese BOE Technology Group trailing behind...
LG X Charge arriving to Xfinity Mobile with 4,500 mAh battery and octa-core CPU
A new smartphone has arrived on Comcast/Xfinity's Verizon-based MVNO network. Xfinity Mobile is available to current Xfinity customers with at-home services: cable, TV, and phone and runs on Verizon's 4G LTE network. Xfinity's handsets also access Xfinity hotspots all over the US and you can choose to pay by the GB or go unlimited. The LG X Charge carries LG's largest battery ever in a smartphone. The 4,500 mAh battery is matched to a generously sized 5.5-inch 720p display powered by a 1.5GHz octa-core CPU and "2GB or 1.5GB" of RAM. The 16GB of internal storage is expandable to up to 2TB...
OnePlus 5 has good chance of surviving in water, just don't try it at home
Over the past day or so, we've seen reports of the OnePlus 5 being "unofficially water resistant". Although OnePlus didn't mention anything about ingress protection against the outside elements at the OnePlus 5's announcement, that hasn't stopped some folks from performing dunk tests with the new smartphone. Mind you, these dunk tests are no basis for calling something "water resistant", particularly when they aren't performed under the correct parameters for certification. Other smartphones that are certified for water resistance have a combination of adhesive and rubber seals...
OnePlus 5 'jelly effect' is "natural", the company says
Earlier today we told you about how some OnePlus 5 owners have noticed a 'jelly effect' on the screen when scrolling. This issue is a bit difficult to describe, but what it basically amounts to is that when you're scrolling some parts of the content of the page or app you're viewing take a little to catch up with the rest. This gives birth to a stretch illusion that people have called 'jelly effect'. Back when the initial reports started coming out, XDA Developers reached out to OnePlus for an official statement on the matter. And now the Chinese company has issued just such a thing. Here...
Bluetooth support is finally making its way to the Google Home
Do you own a Google Home smart speaker? If so, did you know it actually has a Bluetooth chip inside? Yes, really. Except it wasn't activated up until this point, for reasons that are very unclear. Anyway, here's the good news: Bluetooth support is finally rolling out to a Google Home near you. This was announced at Google I/O last month along with a slew of other Home-related updates. It's a silent rollout, this, but there's an easy enough way to check if your particular speaker has been blessed to receive it already. Just go into the Google Home app, and in the Device settings area...
LG V30 to sport OLED panel, no secondary screen
LG must have taken a long look at what Samsung's been doing, design-wise, with its S and Note lines of top of the line smartphones lately and thought it should emulate that strategy somewhat. First off we heard that the upcoming LG V30 would come with a glass back, just like the G6. And now a new report claims that the signature feature of the V line isn't going to be found on the V30. We're talking, of course, about the secondary 'ticker' display, housed above the primary touchscreen in both the V10 and the V20. For better or worse, this feature that was dismissed by some as a gimmick and...
Huawei's new MateBook X, E, and D go on pre-order in the US tomorrow
The new MateBooks that Huawei unveiled back in May are now on their way to the US. The company has officially revealed that pre-orders for the MateBook X, MateBook E, and MateBook D will go live at Amazon and Newegg tomorrow. They should ship later this summer. Here's the pricing breakdown. The cheapest of the bunch is the MateBook D, coming in at $699 with a Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, 1TB HDD, and Nvidia 940MX GPU. The MateBook E starts at $799, for which amount you get a Core m3, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB SSD. If you'd rather have a Core i5 and 8GB of RAM, you'll need to shell out...
Google's Project Fi will support a mid-tier priced smartphone later this year
So far, Google's experimental MVNO (mobile virtual network operator), Project Fi, has only supported Nexus and Pixel devices. The need for specific support (and why it isn't suggested that you just throw your Fi SIM card into any handset you may have lying around) is due to Fi's intelligent switching between its three host carriers. This needs to be enabled in the software of every phone on the network, hence the limited number of officially supported devices. And since the Pixels are much more expensive than any Nexus before them ever was, a lot of people have apparently been complaining...
Moto Z2 Play is now available at Verizon for $408
Following its release in India a couple of weeks ago, the Moto Z2 Play is now available to purchase in the US as well, in gray and gold. There's a catch, however: at the moment you can only buy one from Verizon, or from Motorola's online store for use on Verizon. An unlocked model will be sold at Motorola "later this summer". The handset was made official at the beginning of this month after many weeks of unending leaks. It can be yours for $408 full retail. Alternatively, if you want to use an installment plan you'll put down $0 then followed by 24 monthly payments of...
Reliance Jio offers up to 30GB 4G data on select Xiaomi phones
Reliance Jio is offering a whole bunch of free data to Xiaomi customers. People buying select device will be eligible to 30GB free 4GB data. The way this works is that customers of Xiaomi devices will need to have a Reliance Jio SIM activated on or after June 16, 2017. After that, for every prepaid recharge of INR 309 or above will get 5GB additional data (on top of whatever the recharge normally entails). This can be done for six recharges, totalling 30GB, till March 31, 2018. The list of eligible devices for this include Redmi 2, Redmi 2 Prime, Redmi Note 4G, Redmi Note 4G...
Sony's IFA press conference to be held on August 31
Sony has traditionally used both MWC in February-March and IFA in early September to launch new smartphones, and it now looks like 2017 will be no exception. Today it's been revealed that the Japanese company will in fact hold a press conference at IFA, on the eve of the trade show's official start. Sony's event will take place on August 31 at 1 PM local time. While the company itself obviously hasn't given us any details about what we should expect from the conference, a leak from last month painted a pretty clear picture - namely, that the Xperia XZ1, XZ1 Compact, and X1 should all debut...
Huawei Mate 10 to be powered by 10nm Kirin 970 chipset, rumor claims
It's obviously not surprising that Huawei is currently busy working on the successor to the Mate 9 from last year. Nor is it out of the ordinary for the Chinese company to launch a new in-house chipset with a new Mate series device. What it's planned for this year, however, may be an SoC made using a 10nm process. This rumored Kirin 970 part would thus compete on the same level with Qualcomm's Snapdragon 835 and Samsung's Exynos 8895. The Kirin 970's CPU is expected to have Cortex-A73 cores on the performance cluster just like the 960 featured in the Huawei P10, because apparently the...

Standard delivery is free, and the price is final and tax-free. The deal works for the unlocked version, which works on AT&T, Verizon or T-Mobile. Sadly, Sprint customers will not have the ability to...
Protective cases allegedly leak the design of the Meizu Pro 7
Meizu will be the next manufacturer to follow the dual camera trend with the upcoming Pro 7 flagship. According to the ever-growing amount of leaks, the phone is about to also have a small secondary screen below the camera setup. Latest renders from a case manufacturer reconfirm these rumors. If we tend to believe the images, they reveal the complete design of the Meizu Pro 7. The phone will come with a home button on the front that doubles as a fingerprint camera. Above the display is a single camera, on the left of the speaker grill. On the bottom we can see a speaker,...
You can win an Xperia XZ Premium in Lumous Chrome from the Xperia Lounge
You have a chance to win a Sony Xperia XZ Premium (in Luminous Chrome) if you can answer this question - "What type of durable glass is Xperia XZ Premium made with?" We could tell you the answer, you can find it on the specs page, but, really, it should be a no-brainer. Head to the Xperia Lounge and enter your answer. You don't have to be the first, in fact, far from it. The 5,000th person to answer correctly wins! Golly, what could the answer possibly be? There are some conditions, though. You need to be over 18 and the following countries are excluded from participating:...
Galaxy Note8 design revealed by case maker
As often happens, a case manufacturer released images of a still-unofficial phone - today, it's the Samsung Galaxy Note8. It's a cheap way to drum up publicity and Olixar's transparent gel cases leave little to the imagination. You can see the dual camera, placed horizontally and sharing a hump with the LED flash, heart rate sensor and fingerprint reader. This design lines up nicely with the leaked renders from a couple of days ago. Also note the Bixby button on the side. Samsung Galaxy Note8 cases by Olixar The Galaxy Note8 is set to be unveiled about a month from now on...
Dual SIM Galaxy S8+ reaches mainland Europe
First in the UK, now in mainland Europe too - the dual-SIM version of the Samsung Galaxy S8+ is now on sale. Note that this is a hybrid slot - the second card can be either a nanoSIM or a microSD, but you can't both expand storage and add a second phone line. In Germany, it will cost you 900 and is available in Midnight Black and Orchid Grey. You get a free wireless charging station (valued at 80) to offset some of the premium. It's the same price in Austria, though without the wireless charger. In Spain, it's 910 and, again, no charger. That's still better than Italians, who...
MediaTek unveils system on a chip to power the Internet of Devices
MediaTek introduced the MT2625 system on a chip - behind this unassuming name hides a narrow band Internet of Things chip that is both the smallest yet (16 x 18mm) and supports the full frequency band, allowing devices powered by it to function anywhere in the world. You've probably heard of the "Internet of Things", it's the current drive to fill your home with smart devices. But these devices need to talk to each other and standards like Wi-Fi are too power-hungry and can't support enough devices efficiently. The MT2625 and its Cortex-M processor (104MHz) will sip power. They...
OnePlus 5 posts launch week sales record on Amazon India
The OnePlus 5 has captured the record for highest grossing phone during launch week on Amazon India. The news was broken directly from OnePlus India's official Twitter account although no specific sales figures were mentioned. The #OnePlus5 is now the highest grossing phone in the launch week on @amazonIN! A huge thanks to our community who made this feat possible http://pic.twitter.com/IodKYsFBpy OnePlus India (@OnePlus_IN) June 29, 2017 OnePlus says that the 5 has sold three times more than the 3T over the same period of time although to be fair, the 3T was more of a incremental...
Samsung dedicates a video to Galaxy S8 protective cases
Samsung announced the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8+ on March 29 and as usual released a bunch of protective cases for them. Now that a few million people already got their hands on the latest flagships the company wants to remind everyone of those and how they are the Galaxy S8's best friend. Three of the those even got their own video - the Alcantara Case, the Clear View Standing Cover and the 2Piece Cover. The Clear View Standing Cover is the most impressive looking of the three but adds the most volume to the phone. It protects the precious corners of the not-so-durable Galaxy S8...
iPhone 8 dummy assembled, shown off on video
We've seen the metal frame and the glass panels of the iPhone 8, but we're yet to see the finished product. Well, what do we have here? Here's the quote: "The device shown in this video is manufactured via CNC process. It is based upon 3D CAD sourced directly from the factory in charge of building the new iPhone." So it won't power on so that we can see how that earpiece cuts into the display on top. What happens to the screen around it? The Essential phone just nudged notifications to the side, will the iPhone 8 do the same? What you can see are the dimensions of the handset -...

LG will bring the G6+ to its home of South Korea starting tomorrow - June 30. A 32GB variant of the LG G6 will also launch tomorrow, up until now there was only a 64GB model for the Korean market. Compared to the G6 proper, the G6+ has more storage - 128GB - different color options, B&O headphones in the box and wireless charging support. Naturally these also bring a different price tag. Korean buyers can get the LG G6+ for 957,000 KRW (~$838/735/£646) and the 32GB G6 for 819,500 KRW (~$718/629/£553). Color-wise the LG G6+ will be available in Optical Astro Black, Optical...

Two Nokia feature phones reach TENAA, likely 105 and 130 successors
The new Nokia 3310 was a blast from the past, but HMD is interested in feature phones for more than just the nostalgia. Two new Nokia handsets - TA-1010 and TA-1034 - have landed at the TENAA facilities. These are believed to be the successors of the Nokia 105 and Nokia 130. They don't offer much in the way of features, instead they are pure simplicity. The new 105 doesn't even have a camera! Still, the original 105 used to cost 11 (before taxes), so we're probably looking at a similar cost here (the new 3310 is kind of pricey). New Nokia 105 (TA-1010) in Black and in...

Asus Zenfone 4 to be debut in Europe in September
While we already know that Asus is gearing up to launch as many as six new Zenfone 4 series smartphones, we now have the launch related information for their European launch. The Taiwanese company has started sending out press invites for an event that will be held on September 21 in Rome. I think we have a launch date for ASUS' #ZenFone4 line in Europe. (pic from press 'save the date') http://pic.twitter.com/Up09gAhIew Roland Quandt (@rquandt) June 28, 2017 The invite image doesn't explicitly reveal the name of the product, but such an event clearly points to a major release. Also,...
Nougat roll out for Xperia XA and XA Ultra has been paused, Sony confirms
Nougat for the Sony Xperia XA and XA Ultra started rolling out a couple of weeks ago. But what went largely unnoticed is that the roll out was stopped shortly thereafter. Now, the company has officially confirmed the development, saying it's a temporary pause due to issues with their OTA delivery system. The Japanese company says it is aiming to restart the rollout process "as soon as possible." Here's the full statement that Sony has issued: We've temporarily paused the Android 7.0 upgrade for Xperia XA and Xperia XA Ultra due to minor performance inconsistencies related to the...

Multiple retailers including B&H and Amazon have the handset listed on their respective websites at this discounted rate. The model on offer is the unlocked, US variant (RS988) which was officially being sold by LG for $650. There's currently no information on when the deal ends (or, whether or not it's a permanent price cut). So those interested in availing it may have to act fast. Via | Amazon | B&H
