Sony Xperia 10 and 10 Plus unveiled: mid-rangers with 21:9 screens, dual cameras

Sony has a new market strategy and a new naming scheme. So, no Xs and no As, the new premium mid-rangers are called "Xperia 10" and there are two of them, both with 21:9 screens like the Xperia 1 flagship (note that these are not CinemaWide screens). Bringing up the rear is the Xperia L3 with an old school name and an old school spec sheet. The two Xperia 10 phones and the L3 will be available later today. Sony Xperia 10 Plus The Sony Xperia 10 Plus is like an affordable version of the new Sony flagship. Its 6.5" 21:9 screen is just as large as the Xperia 1 screen, though it's an...

Sony Xperia 1 has the first 4K OLED mobile screen, is first Sony with triple camera

The Sony Xperia 1 is the evolution of the XZ Premium phones. It features the first-ever 4K OLED display with an extra tall 21:9 aspect ratio as well as Sony's first triple camera. The 6.5" display is dubbed CinemaWide for more than its aspect ratio. It combines the X1-style image processing (borrowed from premium Bravia TVs) with the color calibration of Sony's professional master monitors. The display has 3,840 x 1,644px resolution and supports HDR (BT.2020). Amazon and Netflix already have 21:9 HDR content for you to enjoy and the experience will be further enhanced by Dolby Atmos...

Sony Xperia 1, 10 Plus, 10, L3 hands-on review

Sony's fresh new lineup can be best described as different and exciting. First off, we have the Xperia 1, intended as a continuation of Sony's "Premium" line, rather than the flagship "XZ" one. Then there are the Xperia 10 and Xperia 10 Plus, which are shaping up as successors to the popular "XA" lineup. Last and probably least, there is the new Xperia L3 entry-level model.

Oppo VP shows foldable prototype - it's the same as the Huawei Mate X

Foldable phones appear to be the trend at the beginning of 2019. Samsung has the Galaxy Fold, yesterday Huawei introduced the Mate X, TCL revealed some foldable dummies at MWC 2019, and now Oppo is jumping the hype train. Brian Shen, Vice President at the Chinese phone maker, posted on his Weibo profile a foldable prototype. He said it is just a demo unit and the technology is not bringing huge improvement in user experience, so Oppo has no plans to launch it for now. Oppo Foldable phone Looking at the phone, we can't run away from the obvious fact that it looks exactly...

Watch Sony unveil the Xperia 1 and Xperia 10 live

Sony is back at the MWC. Last year it unveiled the XZ2 and XZ2 Compact, this year it will be embracing a new perspective. The new 21:9 CinemaWide displays have leaked multiple times - they will be featured both on the flagship Xperia 1 (aka XZ4) as well as the mid-range Xperia 10 and 10 Plus (aka XA3). The event starts at 7:30 GMT and will run for about 45 minutes. Those three quarters of an hours will be tightly packed as Sony needs to unveil its first first triple camera phone on the Xperia 1 (rumors about it have mentioned 52MP sensors as well as 3D ToF modules). And talk about the new...

Weekly poll results: everyone was excited for the Samsung event, also Nokia and Sony

With a busy Wednesday and an even busier weekend, the last few days have changed the smartphone landscape. The most hotly-anticipated event proved to be the Samsung reveal, which opened up with Samsung's first foldable phone, introduced its first 5G phone and even had time to announce three Galaxy S10 flagships. That event topped the chart in last week's poll with nearly half the votes. The Xiaomi event (which was on the same day) sits in third place. Perhaps the Mi Mix 3 5G reveal from this Sunday and the European pricing of the Mi 9 will give Xiaomi a few more points on the...

Sony's MWC event starts tomorrow, here's what to expect

We already saw Xiaomi, Huawei, Nokia and many more introducing their latest handsets in Barcelona. As usual, Sony scheduled its event early in the morning at the first day of MWC 2019, and the time has come. The rumor mill kept spewing new info every other day, so we summed up the most trustworthy rumors and leaks. Tall Screens Sony trademarked the CinemaWide moniker for its display, confirming we are about to see Cinema ratio of 21:9 in a smartphone, making it one of the longest out there. Surely it will remain P-OLED as the Xperia XZ3, but the fingerprint scanner will stay on the...

Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G, Mi 9 Explorer, and Mi 9 SE hands-on review

Xiaomi was among the makers to hold a special press event at Barcelona ahead of the MWC. It unveiled its first 5G smartphone - an upgraded Mi Mix 3 5G model. It also showcased the Mi 9 Explorer edition and the Mi 9 SE.

LG V50 ThinQ 5G and LG G8 ThinQ hands-on review

The Mobile World Congress in Barcelona is in full swing and LG has just announced its flagship lineup for the upcoming season. Three new phones premiered on the stage - the LG V50 ThinQ 5G and the LG G8 ThinQ.

LG unveils V50 ThinQ 5G and G8 ThinQ and G8s Thinq

It's time for LG to show us its plans for the future of mobile. Today at the MWC 2019 it unveiled the V50 ThinQ 5G as well as the G8 ThinQ and the G8s ThinQ. LG is keeping with the times and is making 5G a major focus, so much so that it's added it to the name of its flagship. The LG V50 ThinQ 5G is the maker's first 5G phone with a Snapdragon 855 chipset with an embedded Qualcomm X50 modem, promising "up to 20 times the speed of 4G". The LG V50 ThinQ looks similar to its predecessor thanks to essentially the same 6.4-inch 3120x1440px OLED FullVision display. LG has steered clear of the...

Feast your eyes on these Nokia 9 PureView camera samples

The Light-powered penta-camera on the Nokia 9 PureView is unlike anything we've tested before. We've watched Google invest heavily into computational photography and we've seen others take to image stacking with one or several sensors. But HMD has done it on a scale that surpasses everyone. We have a lot of testing to do and we've started collecting camera samples already. Here are a few we took earlier today: Note: if you're on desktop, our image gallery shows some EXIF data: ISO, shutter speed and (simulated in this case) aperture. Nokia 9 PureView camera...

The official Nokia videos offer short intros to Nokia 9 PureView and company

You can rewind the HMD livestream to watch the five new Nokia phones get unveiled or you can watch the official promo videos for minute-long summaries. Let's start from the top - the Nokia 9 PureView. It's all about that Light-powered penta-camera with Zeiss optics. Those cameras shoot simultaneously to capture more light and detailed depth information (which is supported by Google Photos for easy editing). Next up is the Nokia 4.2, which comes in the new signature Pink Sand color. There's NFC with Google Pay support. The Nokia 3.2 has a larger screen than the 4.2, larger...

Hands-on: TCL's foldable displays and phones

TCL is definitely shaking things up this year. Naturally, MWC saw the launch of a slew of affordable alcatel devices (3, 3L, 1s and 3T 10). However, the Chinese corporation also presented itself in a brand new light at the event, dipping its toes into the trendy and cutting-edge foldable display scene, in hopes of establishing itself as a tech innovator and perhaps even trend-setter. Definitely a new role and quite the goal to strive toward. The way TCL is currently going about this is form the ground up, solving the issues with foldable displays one at a time. The company...

Alcatel 3, 3L, 1s hands-on review

As has pretty much become tradition TCL dropped a slew of new alcatel devices at its MWC event. Confusing naming scheme, affordable price tags and sensible modest specs sheets all accounted for. That being said, this year's announcements were arguably a bit more exciting. And not just because of the flexible display demos also teased by TCL. Even purely in the realm of alcatel things are looking a bit more dynamic this year. In case you want more details on the trio of news smartphones, as well as some specs, you can check our the announcement news. There's a rather interesting 3T...

BlackBerry Key2 Red Edition hands-on review

A black suit is stylish, but it can get boring. The BlackBerry Key2 Red Edition adds a pop of color to the otherwise serious business phone and it comes bundled with a matching pair of red earbuds in the retail package. The Series 7000 aluminum frame of the Key2 has been painted red, you can also see the color around the keys. It doesn't go too wild, though, as it keeps the textured back (which is super grippy) as well as the hardware keyboard painted black. BlackBerry Key2 Red Edition The Red Edition comes with 128GB of storage, previously only on the Dual SIM edition in black...

Alcatel 1s, 3, 3L smartphones and 3T tablet announced at MWC

Over the years TCL has managed to adapt and carve out a pretty neat if not particularly interesting market niche for itself. At least as far as the alcatel brand goes. In an increasingly competitive and aggressive mobile market, TCL maintains a very flexible portfolio of affordable devices, often specifically tailor towards carriers as conveniently customizable on-contract offers. This year does mark a slight breakaway from that formula at least on a conceptual level with the reveal of a few flexible display concepts and a proprietary hinge mechanism to back them up from TCL. But, even so,...

Nokia 9 PureView goes official, see the first five-camera setup

Rejoice, Nokia fans, as the next PureView phone is finally here! The long-rumored Nokia 9 PureView has been unveiled at the MWC in Barcelona and both professional and enthusiast photographers should have something truly unique to talk about. But before we dive deep into the next PureView camera, let's see what the whole phone is made of. Well, it's glass, dual-glass to be precise and a metal frame holding those together. We live in the glass smartphones era, so there is little surprise HMD chose to stick with the timeless glass body. The Nokia 9 is also IP67-rated for dust...

HMD unveils Nokia 1 Plus, 3.2, 4.2 and Nokia 210

HMD unveiled three budget smartphones mere hours before the start of the annual MWC in Barcelona - the Nokia 1 Plus, Nokia 3.2, and Nokia 4.2. One feature phone is also on the list - the Nokia 210. Nokia 4.2 The Nokia 4.2, despite what the model name might suggest, isn't a successor to a specific device. Not only that, but it's the first Nokia phone ever to use the number 4 at that start of its model number. The Nokia 4.2 is a dual-glass smartphone with a plastic frame, which makes its build the most premium of the newly announced budget offers. The 4.2 model packs a...

Nokia 9 PureView hands-on review

The next Nokia PureView phone is finally here. The long-rumored Nokia 9 PureView has been unveiled at the MWC in Barcelona and enthusiast photographers may finally have their smartphone sidekick.

Nokia 4.2, 3.2, 1 Plus and 210 hands-on review

There is no shortage of announcements this MWC. Today we see four new devices from Nokia from the feature-phone category progressively through to the top of the midrange. It has only been just over two years since HMD Global began marketing smartphones with the Nokia brand and its portfolio keeps getting bigger despite the overall global smartphone market declining.

Watch the Nokia 9 PureView unveiling at MWC

The day before the MWC 2019 is loaded with announcements. First, it was the Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 5G, followed by the foldable Huawei Mate X. Now it is time for the HMD Global event, where we expect to see the Nokia 9 PureView with five cameras on the live stream Nokia provided for all its fans. We've been hearing about a Nokia flagship with five cameras in a circular setup for a long time, but at the end of 2018, a promo video leaked, revealing all key specs of the smartphone. It will have Snapdragon 845, under-display fingerprint scanner and tall screen with regular bezels. However, the...

Xiaomi Mi 9 taken apart, check out the 20W wireless charging coil and triple camera

The Xiaomi Mi 9 packs a lot of flagship inside a €450 package. Want to see what goes inside that package? It starts with the Gorilla Glass 5 on the back that comes in some wild iridescent colors. Just below that is the coil for the world's fastest 20W wireless charging, the NFC antenna too. And below that is the 3,300mAh battery. The front and back glass as well as everything inside is mounted to the 7000 series aluminum chassis. Removing the GG5 back • A close up of the 20W wireless charging coil 3,300mAh battery • CNC machined 7000 series aluminum This is the...

Huawei Mate X hands-on review

"Foldable" is clearly the buzz -word of 2019. Well, that and 5G - a rather confusing situation that has been causing some evident confusion among manufacturers. Huawei clearly decided on a Pokemnon, "Gotta Catch 'EM All" approach to the situation with the Mate X - a truly head-turning device that both rocks a foldable display and what Huawei claims is the faster 5G connectivity around.

Huawei Mate X arrives with foldable screen and 55W SuperCharge

You've seen the teasers, but now everything is official - Huawei introduced its foldable smartphone, called Mate X. It comes with 5G connectivity, based on Huawei's modem called Baolong 5000, and the company claims it is the fastest 5G smartphone. The device will also have 55W SuperCharge, making it the fastest charging smartphone, and Huawei says the Mate X can top up 85% of the battery in 30 minutes. In tablet mode, the Mate X has an 8" screen with a resolution of 2480 x 2200 pixels. When the device is folded, the main part becomes 6.6" with a resolution of 2480 x 1148...

Huawei MateBook X Pro and MateBook 14 hands-on review

Time for a new MateBook upgrade! After the announcement of the new MateBook 13 during CES 2019, it's now time for the big boys - the MateBook X Pro and MateBook 14. While the MateBook X is just a hardware refresh of its predecessor of some sort, the MateBook 14 is actually a new addition to the MateBook family. The latter focuses on performance while missing on some features to keep the price more bearable. MateBook X Pro Let's begin with the MateBook X Pro. The design remains untouched. The weight and dimensions are the same but the laptop packs some cool improvements under the hood....

Quiet video lets the Samsung Galaxy Fold explain its brilliance by itself

The future has arrived - not with a bang, not even a whisper. Samsung has posted a video called "Get to Know the Galaxy Fold" and it's almost completely quiet. All you hear is how the phone folds closed with the slightest "click" and the notification beep as a Galaxy Watch Active starts charging from the phone thanks to Wireless PowerShare. The unique hinge that allows the Fold to open and close smoothly while protecting the screen makes no sound. The cover of that hinge can be customized - since you're paying $1,980 for a phone, you may as well get the premium treatment. Then there are...

LG G8 ThinQ pops up on Geekbench with Snapdragon 855

LG's new flagship G8 ThinQ is supposed to go out tomorrow so it's not all surprising that a Geekbench listing appeared with the phone running Qualcomm's latest and greatest. And it appears to be a final unit too because the scores are in line with what we got on the Xiaomi Mi 9, for example. In fact, the multi-core score is slightly higher but still negligible. And although this is all we got for today, you can still go back and run through the latest rumors if you are too impatient to wait for tomorrow's unveiling. Via

2018 Amazon Kindle Paperwhite review

The Kindle Paperwhite is the quintessential ebook reader. It sits snugly in between the barebones Kindle and the flagship Kindle Oasis within Amazon's lineup. After launching the third generation model all the way back in 2015, the Paperwhite got an update late last year with the fourth generation model, referred to now as the All-New Kindle Paperwhite. One of the main changes in the new model is the design. The 2018 model now has a flat front side, with the display no longer being sunken within the frame. The entire front now has a matte finished glass cover with a smooth texture. The...
