Google Search's new 'Personal' tab shows results from other Google services

Google has added a new tab to its Search application. Dubbed Personal, the tab shows personalized search results from other Google Services that the user has subscribed to, including Gmail, Google Calendar, and Google+. I could search for my emails and photos (stored in Google photos), and as you can see in the screenshot below, the results are private, unless you explicitly make them public. The feature is live for both desktop and mobile clients of the application. If the Personal tab doesn't show up straight away, you can try finding it in the More menu. Via | Google Support...

Counterclockwise: Nokia Tune, iPhone Marimba and the popularity of ringtones

A default ringtone is a dead giveaway of what kind of phone you have - even if it's out of sight, in your pocket or backpack. Some tones have become as recognizable as hit songs, people certainly hear them often enough. One of the most famous ringtones is the Nokia Tune aka "Grande Valse". Based on 1902's composition for solo guitar by Francisco Tarrega, the tune has seen many updates and changes and is solidly lodged in our minds. But the first time Nokia used the Grande Valse was not as a ringtone, instead it used it in a 1992 ad for the Nokia 1011, the company's first GSM phone. The...

Top 10 trending phones of week 21

The Galaxy S8 is clearly a phone you love. It hasn't come down from the top spot since it was introduced on March 29. This week we have no new entries to the top 10, but there's plenty of movers. The record-smashing Redmi Note 4 is still in second, but Galaxy J7 Prime gives up the third for the Redmi 4X. Two more Redmi 4 devices occupy the next positions - the extremely affordable Redmi 4a and the Chinese version of the Xiaomi Redmi 4. Xiaomi's flagship sits on 9th, right in front of the iPhone 6. The main reason why a 2014 flagship appears among the hits of 2017 is Apple reintroduced...

Weekly poll: on-screen buttons on wider screens vs. hardware buttons

Have you ever wondered why TVs have a 16:9 aspect ratio? If you want to know the full story, this video does an excellent job of covering it. But that's trivia now, like it or not, 16:9 screens are the most popular option. Though that ratio gets skewed when phones have on-screen buttons. True, they do duck out of the way when you're watching a video (or even just viewing a photo), but physical buttons never get in the way of on-screen content. And they allowed makers to keep the fingerprint reader on the front (which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on who you ask). There's...
