Canadian Moto G4 Plus units to get Nougat update next month

If you are a Moto G4 Plus owner in Canada, and are waiting for your device to get the Nougat update, here's some news for you: the update will be rolled out next month. At-least that's what Telus subsidiary Koodo has revealed. The carrier has mentioned on its website that Motorola Moto G4 Plus units on its network will start getting the update on February 11. So, it would be reasonable to expect that other carriers will also push out the update around the same time. Koodo's website also reveals that Moto Z Play units on its network will start receiving the update in March, which is...

Waze now lets you find places by category (no exact names required)

Community-based traffic and navigation app Waze has received a new update that brings along several changes, including the ability to find places by category as well as new auto complete distance feature. You can now search for places by category, such as nearby parking, restaurants, hotels, shopping, and more. This means you're no longer restricted to typing exact names. The update also includes an enhancement to the search by voice feature. "Search for a street by speaking its name in the language of the country you're in, even if your Waze is in another language," the change-log...

Nougat rolls out for unlocked Samsung Galaxy S7, Monday for Vodafone UK

Owners of the Galaxy S7 and S7 edge who participated in the Nougat beta program have already been fed the official OTA of the latest version of Android. Nougat was set to officially begin rolling out on January 17, and we're already seeing reports of the handsets receiving the major update on unlocked models (SM-G930F and SM-G935F), many of which are in the UK. The update weighs in at about 1.2 to 1.3GB whose build number is XXU1DPLT. Likewise, one user on Reddit reports that Vodafone UK agent confirmed the S7 update will being rolling out to carrier units starting Monday, January...

LG will hold G6 press event on Feb 26 at MWC

LG has begun sending early invitations or 'save-the-dates' to the media for its press event. The invite is in the outline of a smartphone, and the text says "See More, Play More". Right away, we could tie the first part with a larger screen: See more. While the other part could be indicative of a higher-capacity battery: Play more. By 12:00 (local time, Barcelona) on February 26, everyone can expect to know more about the LG G6. Here's what we know so far: The LG G6 will not be modular like the G5. Instead, its design is said to comprise of metal and glass, and is...

These are the glass panels for the Galaxy S8, allegedly

A couple of days ago, someone on Twitter published a couple of photos of what are claimed to be two glass panels for the Galaxy S8 in two different sizes (both of which are, in fact, curved). The tweet was written in Polish, so naturally, it took a little longer to surface mobile news. The first thing you may notice on these glass panels is that there are more openings set aside for sensors than we saw in the renders and dimensions that first leaked. Given that these renders were likely sent to case makers for pre-production design, perhaps it was not a finalized one. There are many more...

Meizu Pro 6 Plus review: imPROved

Meizu Pro 5 used to be an excellent device and when the company didn't follow the same formula with the Pro 6 it left many of us surprised and its fans disappointed due to the choice of specs, which didn't seem to make it a true successor to Meizu's top dog. Today, the new Pro 6 Plus brings back the big 5.7" AMOLED screen and also comes with 1440p resolution. It comes with the top-end Exynos chip by Samsung - the same one that powers the Galaxy S7 series.

Microsoft is bringing Cortana for Android onto your lock screen

Back in December Microsoft redesigned the Cortana experience on Android and iOS, and now the company is already working on a big new feature addition. Over in the beta channel of the Cortana for Android app, Microsoft is testing bringing the virtual assistant onto your lock screen. If you decide to become a beta tester for the app now, or if you simply wait for the inevitable release to everyone in the near future, once you get the update that enables this functionality you'll be asked if you want to add Cortana to your lock screen. Answering that affirmatively will result in a Cortana...

vivo V5 Lite unveiled too with lower-end specs

vivo wasn't content with just announcing the V5 Plus today. Instead, the Chinese company also took the wraps off the V5 Lite, which is the third model in the V5 family and the lowest-end of them all. Thus, we expect it to be the cheapest V5 you can buy, even if pricing has unfortunately not been unveiled yet. The V5 Lite doesn't have the V5 Plus' unique dual front camera arrangement, but it does keep the "selfie softlight" flash for its 16 MP f/2.0 snapper. The rear camera is a 13 MP unit with f/2.2 aperture, and it has a LED flash. This device is powered by an unnamed 64-bit...

vivo V5 Plus becomes official with dual front camera, Snapdragon 625

A couple of days ago we saw the then-unannounced vivo V5 Plus going up for pre-order prematurely in Malaysia, and today the new smartphone has been officially unveiled. The V5 Plus comes with many upgrades compared to the V5 from 2016, but what vivo seems to be most proud of is the dual front camera arrangement, with 20 MP + 8 MP resolution and "selfie softlight" flash. The 20 MP snapper in there uses Sony's IMX376 1/2.78" sensor with f/2.0 aperture and 5P lens system, while the 8 MP f/2.0 camera captures depth information. This will make bokeh effects easily attainable, keeping faces...

Unlocked Moto Z in the US gets Nougat next month, Moto Z Play in March

If you're in the US and own a Moto Z bought unlocked, you may have been very surprised to see Verizon's version of the device already rocking Android 7.0 Nougat while your unit is still stuck on Marshmallow. This is anything but usual in the mobile world, where updates usually roll out to unlocked units first, because there are no lengthy carrier testing periods for those. Carrier-specific models often trail unlocked ones by many weeks, or sometimes even months, in this regard. Yet because Verizon's Moto Z was launched well before the unlocked model, the two are being worked on by separate...

ZUK Z2 Pro is being updated to Android 7.0 Nougat

Exactly one week ago a Lenovo Group VP made a promise regarding the update to Android 7.0 Nougat for the ZUK Z2 Pro - namely, that it would be rolling out at some point this week. And it turns out that prediction was accurate after all. Starting today, ZUK Z2 Pro units are receiving the update which brings with it the latest version of the Lenovo sub-brand's own skin on top of Android too, which is ZUI 2.5.335. This is built on Android 7.0 Nougat, so owners of the Z2 Pro can now taste this iteration of Google's mobile OS for the first time, as you can see from the screenshots...

Sony to reveal new phones on February 27 at MWC

We've been hearing rumors about alleged Xperia devices but Sony is keeping its lips tight about any releases and launches. We knew the company will have a press conference at MWC in Barcelona next month and now we have an exact date for that. The press invite says February 27, 7:30 GMT. We are expecting to hear more about the alleged Sony Xperia XA successor which we saw earlier in renders. We've seen front panel leaks and press images of other devices, but we are yet to see if all of them will go official or some will have to wait until IFA in September. The GSMArena team will...

Asus stops ZenFone 3 Android Nougat update rollout

Asus started rolling out the Nougat 7.0 update for the Zenfone 3 in the Philippines last week and a global update was going to follow soon. Apparently some bugs appeared when people started applying it so the company has suspended the campaign until it addresses thee issues. Asus Philippines directly confirmed that the update is on hold, but without officially detailing the bugs. The company is also advising users to enable the "Auto Download System Update" setting so they can receive and install the Nougat 7.0 right away when it is available. Via

Case renders reveal the design of Galaxy J7 (2017)

Samsung are going bold with their A-series and J-series in 2017. The Korean company started the year with the Galaxy A3 (2017), Galaxy A5 (2017) and Galaxy A7 (2017) and is now moving to the lower-standing J-series. This is the slightly more affordable lineup and thus they create less buzz as they go about their business. The Galaxy J7 (2017) was revealed bit by bit, rumor after rumor. We already know most of the specs and we saw 3D renders. And now we eventually see an actual devices thanks to leaked case manufacturer's images. The design is a lot like the Samsung Galaxy...

Nougat coming to Nvidia Shield and Shield K1 tablets in a few weeks

Nvidia pushed out the Android 7.0 Nougat update for the Shield TV (2015) and is now recruiting testers for the Shield and Shield K1 tablets. If all goes well, the update will roll out in "a few weeks". You can read this post on Google+ if you're interested in joining the beta tester program. We're talking the same Shield Upgrade 5.0 that the TV got (based on Android 7.0 Nougat), impressive considering the original Shield tablet launched with Android 4.4 KitKat! In case you missed it, GeForce Now will support up to GTX 1080 performance and you can stream No Man's Sky and other games...

Sony G3221 passes through AnTuTu, will have 23MP + 16MP cameras

User agent profiles showed that Sony's upcoming G3221 will sport a Helio P20 chipset and now an AnTuTu screenshot offers some additional details. The chipset will be paired with a hearty 4GB of RAM and 64GB storage and will run Android 7.0 Nougat at launch. The Sony G3221 also sports a 23MP main camera and a 16MP selfie cam, plus a 1080p screen. AnTuTu screenshot of Sony G3221 The Xperia M5, which launched in mid-2015 had similar specs (except it was powered by a Helio X10), perhaps we're looking at a successor. Source

Google Search app will automatically show results when you're back online

In an update to the Google Search app for Android, you will now be able to perform searches even when your device is offline. With this new feature, the app remembers your search queries for when it cannot connect to the internet. Later, when you are back online, it silently runs that query again for you and shows a notification with the results. Google says this feature doesn't require any additional battery or data than performing a normal search. This should be convenient for those who live in spotty network coverage areas or while you're travelling and don't have consistent...

Android One is heading to US

Google's Android One platform was launched back in 2014 to provide affordable smartphones to developing markets without the bloatware that usually goes hand-by-hand with low-cost devices. Android One historically been produced by reasonably minor companies such as Micromax, Cherry and QMobile. Over time the platform became more flexible and expanded beyond India to parts of Africa, Turkey, Spain and Portugal. Google made a strong statement in the high-end market with the Google Pixel. But the results at the other end of the smartphone spectrum aren't and many expected that the...

Sony Xperia Z3+ is getting Android 7.0 now

Just a day after seeding the Android 7.0 Nougat update to the Xperia Z5 family, Sony is now pushing the fresh software to the Xperia Z3+. The Xperia Z3+ is getting the exact same update as its successor, bearing an identical 32.3.A.0.372 version number. Android 7.0 is a good step up from Marshmallow in terms of features. It brings system-wide Multi-window support so you can now have Samsung-style fun on non-Samsung devices. Along for the ride is an improved Android Doze - the feature that ups stand-by with some app-pausing trickery and various (but just as important) security...

Evernote gets faster and smarter with 8.0 update for iOS

There was a time when Evernote was the gold standard when it came to note-taking apps. But as time progressed, the app took on a bloated look, as did the company itself, with many irrelevant products being sold, and eventually people started looking for alternatives. The company has been trying to get itself back on track for a while now and it's most apparent in their latest update for iOS, which brings with it many new changes. Version 8.0 brings a new user interface that focuses on speed and efficiency. The main screen shows all your notes with a prominent button for creating...

Google Maps to introduce parking availability

Google Maps knows where you are working, living and how's the traffic around you. But after the latest beta update, it will also know what's the parking availability around you. If you set up your route from Point A to Point B, a small blue icon with the letter P appears next to the estimated time of arrival stating that the situation is either Easy or Medium. If the parking options are Limited the icon turns red. Once you start navigating and the directions expand, you receive further details along with the current availability. The navigation service Waze (owned by...

According to the report the new phones, which are sold directly from Xiaomi's website, are in circulation since January 11, though Xiaomi hasn't come out with an official statement to confirm this. There doesn't seem to be any other change to the Xiaomi Redmi 4 aside from the slightly-altered dimensions. Source | Via

Samsung will supply Exynos chipsets for Audi's infotainment system

Samsung Electronics and Audi announced that Exynos chipsets will power Audi's next-generation In Vehicle Infotainment system. This is part of Audi's Progressive SemiConductor Program (PSCP) that began in 2010 with the mission to bring cutting edge tech to the company's vehicles. The top Exynos chip can run up to four different displays in the car at once and supports several operating systems for Audi to choose from. It's not yet clear when Exynos will land in cars. At CES 2016, Audi showed off a concept interior for the A8, which sported Samsung-made OLED displays: a 14.1" OLED for...

FTC charges Qualcomm with anti-competitive practices

Trade comissions all over the world race to sue Qualcomm for malicious practices and now it's time for the US FTC to file an appeal against the San Diego-based company. According to FTC's court filing: Qualcomm engaged in exclusionary conduct that taxes its competitors' baseband processor sales, reduces comptetitors' ability and incentive to innovate and raises prices paid by consumers for cell phones and tablets. This comes just weeks after a lawsuit in South Korea that ordered the chipset company to pay $854M for the patent licensing practices and half an year after another fine -...
