New report says Samsung's first foldable smartphone will enter production in Q4

A rumor last month said that Samsung will out a foldable smartphone sometime in the Q3-A4 2017 timeframe. However, if a new report is to go by, launch might not happen until next year as the phone will enter production in Q4. The report, which cites sources from Taiwan's handset supply chain, says that the tech giant will begin a "small production" in the fourth quarter of this year, adding that mass production isn't expected to start until H2 2018. The reason behind this delay is said to be technical issues involving the production and reliability of the PI (polyimide)-based...

Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Tab 3 on T-Mobile start getting February security update

T-Mobile has started rolling out a new update to Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy Tab 3 units on its network. Arriving as firmware versions M919UVSFQA1 and T217TUVSBQA1, respectively, the update brings Android security fixes for the month of February. A quick look at the magenta carrier's website reveals that the update to both these devices (which are still on Android 4.4.4) doesn't include anything else. As is usually the case with OTA roll outs, it may take some time for the update to hit your device. Meanwhile, if you feel impatient, you can manually check for the update by heading...

You'll soon be able to wake up Amazon Tap with "Alexa" hotword

The Amazon Tap is a Bluetooth speaker that Amazon released back in March of last year, also integrating the company's voice-assistant named Alexa. Up until now, you had to press the physical button on the Amazon Tap speaker to bark a command to Alexa. Given that the Tap runs on a battery, its ability to wake up with the "Alexa" trigger word was not available. A firmware is coming to the Amazon Tap which will allow the user to enable a "Hands-free" feature that would allow users to call out Amazon's wake up word to use it just as the Echo was intended: hands-free. The update will also...

Pixel's Google Assistant is now able to control smart home devices

The Google Pixel introduced Google's new Assistant, which Google Now will eventually phase into over the next several months. What was interesting was that Google's Assistant was the same one found on Google's newest ‘smart home' device: the Google Home assistant. If you would have asked your Pixel to "turn on the kitchen lights" just last month, you'd get a canned response and your lights would have stayed exactly how they were: turned off. Fortunately, Google has recently flipped the switch for controlling smart home peripherals with your smartphone. In addition to Google Home's most...

Verizon Protection Plan available for open enrollment, offers same day screen replacements

Every once in a while, a carrier may open enrollment for the device protection service plan so that customers who missed out in enrollment upon first buying their shiny new connected device. Today, Verizon has done just that with its highest-level Protection Plan and also announces that it is offering same-day screen replacement for damages devices. Carriers usually use a third-party insurance company to overnight you a replacement device, though with Verizon's Total Mobile Protection plan, Big Red has made replacing a damaged device a bit less of a headache. Verizon has a few...

Verizon responds to OpenSignal's Network comparison

Yesterday, we covered a report that OpenSignal released which took data from its crowd-sourced database of speed tests on various carriers across the US and tried to make sense of it all by using the data to comparatively measure carriers against each other. Verizon is definitely not happy about being tied with T-Mobile, and wants to set the record straight once and for all. http://pic.twitter.com/qNaZqfk9jq— Verizon News (@VerizonNews) February 9, 2017 Verizon just tweeted a statement about OpenSignal's report and makes a list of points as to why OpenSignal's numbers are not representative...

Android Nougat update for Honor 8 begins rolling out tomorrow

Honor has made it official that the Honor 8's Android Nougat update will begin rolling out to all users starting tomorrow. Everyone who hasn't received the Nougat update will begin getting those OTA notifications starting tomorrow. The update is expected to last through the end of February, by which time, all Honor 8 devices would have been updated. The Android Nougat update brings a plethora of new features to the pricier of Honor smartphones. The update also brings EMUI 5.0, the newest version of Huawei's Android Skin that promises quicker and more optimized performance while also...

Today OnePlus has commenced the rollout of a new software update for its two latest flagships - the OnePlus 3 and 3T. The new version is still based on Android 7.0 Nougat, but OnePlus has added some bug fixes and performance improvements in the form of OxygenOS 4.0.3. This follows the release of OxygenOS 4.0.2 last month. Here's what you can expect from this new release, regardless of whether you have the OnePlus 3 or the 3T: Added Wi-Fi IPv6 Support toggle Optimized Smart Wi-Fi Switcher, if turned on, device will switch to data connection if Wi-Fi signal is consistently...

All three 2017 iPhones are once again said to sport wireless charging

While the sources for the rumors can't seem to agree on their exact screen sizes, most mumblings we've heard over the past few months regarding Apple's plans have mentioned that the company will launch three new phones this year. One of those could be a special anniversary model with an OLED touchscreen - called either iPhone 8 or iPhone X (because it's the tenth anniversary of the original iPhone in 2017). If this version pans out, then it should be joined by an iPhone 7s and a 7s Plus. On the other hand, Apple could go with the usual 4.7" and 5.5" sizes and add a 5" model in the middle....

New LG G6 teaser says its intelligence isn't artificial

LG has outed a new teaser for the G6 today, which you can see in the image below. The Korean company seems to imply, in a not-so-subtle way, that the G6 will come packing a virtual assistant of its own - but it uses the words "artificial" and "intelligence" because "AI" is the buzzword of 2017, even though most things a virtual assistant does don't actually qualify as "AI". Anyway, in this day and age you simply can't launch a flagship smartphone without an "AI" assistant of its own, and LG knows this. So it's promising us that its implementation will be "less artificial" than others,...

Nvidia's Shield tablets are starting to receive the Android 7.0 Nougat update

In the Android tablet world, Nvidia really stands out when it comes to software updates. It's not that the company pushed updates incredibly quick or anything like that. But think about it - the Nvidia Shield tablet from 2014 is now in the process of receiving the update to Android 7.0 Nougat. Again, this launched in the summer of 2014, it's almost three years old, and yet it's still supported. Compare that to any other non-Nexus or Pixel tablet out there. Of course, the Shield K1 from 2015 is also receiving its taste of Nougat. Nvidia has started the rollout for both of its tablets today,...

LG V20 v. Huawei Mate 9: Camera-derie between rivals

Did you know that once upon a time pineapples were a status symbol? People place great importance on strange things sometimes, but we're sure that having the best flagship matters - we're not just imagining that it's important to have two cameras, a best-in-class display and a beastly chipset caged in a metal unibody. Those are not passing fads like a modular design, right LG?

Alleged Sony XZ successor caught in live shots

By the looks of things, Sony is gearing up for at least a few interesting announcements at MWC 2017. A few days ago, we caught a glimpse, of what was said to be the Xperia XA2. Now, another source has leaked a few blurry shots of, presumably, the next Xperia XZ flagship. There are a few stills to analyze here and we did have to do a fair amount of investigative work to arrive at some conclusions, uncertain as they might be. First, there is a shot, containing a total of four Sony handsets. The source claims the Xperia XZ2 is the one in the bottom right corner. Looking at the other units,...

HMD Global is making the new Nokia devices in Vietnam

When HMD Global bought the Nokia smartphone business from Microsoft, everyone was hopeful for a bright future in front of the brand. In addition to the brand, HMD also bought out the factories that used to make feature phones. But as we see from a Russian source, they still haven't renamed them and Nokia 150 still is technically manufactured by Microsoft Mobile LLC. From the images we see that the devices were ready back in late December. According to the certificate that goes along with the package, the factory that manufactured Nokia 150 is Microsoft Mobile (Vietnam) LLC with local...

Apple's 10th anniversary iPhone to cost more than $1000?

2017 is a big year for Apple and its fans, as it marks the 10th anniversary of the first iPhone. Because of this, Apple fanboys and we tech media alike are excited to see what's coming. Some speculate that Apple will release a 4.7" iPhone 7s, a 5.5" iPhone 7s Pus and a 5.8" iPhone 8 (or, wait for it, iPhone X) with an OLED screen and specs straight out of some far-fetched wishlist. For starters rumor has it the iPhone X could have a button-free design with an edge-to-edge OLED screen with the home button somehow built in, no side buttons but instead touch-sensitive inlays and some...

Android 7.0 update restarts for Xperia Z5, Z3+ and Z4 Tablet

Sony has re-issued the Android 7.0 update for the Xperia Z5, Xperia Z3+ and Xperia Z4 Tablet after it suspended it almost a month ago due to issues reported by early adopters. The update carries the build number 32.3.A.0.376 while the last update was 32.3.A.0.372. The firmware will be gradually rolling out to each Xperia device over the air but more experienced users could attempt to flash it onto their devices once the firmware becomes available - link to XDA thread here. Have you received an update? Drop us a line in the comments. Via

Samsung Galaxy S8 to have 3,000mAh and 3,500mAh batteries

A report from an unnamed Samsung official says that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S8 duo will pack a 3,000mAh battery in the 5.8" S8 and a 3,500mAh in the 6.2" S8 Plus. This means the new flagships will have less capacity per inch of screen than the 5.2" Galaxy S7 (3,000mAh) and the 5.5" Galaxy S7 Edge (3,600mAh). If the report turns true that would mean that the Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus will have the same battery capacity as the Galaxy Note7 although there's no reason to expect the same issues this time around, as Samsung has taken measures. Samsung is rumored to be unveiling the...

B&O Beoplay H4 headphones combine Bluetooth listening with premium design

Maybe you missed out on the free B&O Beoplay H3 headphones that T-Mobile was handing out with the LG V20 and maybe the Beoplay H6 isn't to your liking. If that's the case, check out the new B&O Beoplay H4 cans. Using the dedicated Beoplay app, you can adjust the tonality and sound staging of these over the ear headphones. The app is available for the Apple Watch as well as smartphones (iOS and Android). If you don't want to use Bluetooth (v4.2, AAC codec is supported) then you can use your phone's 3.5mm headphone jack (a 1.2m/4ft long cable is supplied in the box). B&O Beoplay...

Samsung trademarks 'Hello', a part of the Bixby voice assistant

We've been calling Samsung Galaxy S8's digital assistant "Bixby" but a trademark filing reveals that Samsung may have a more generic name in mind - Hello. The filing trademarks the word specifically and the description gives us a glimpse of the assistant's capabilities. You can ask it about weather, manage appointments, control the music player, organize your phonebook and get personalized news articles and information. All this is done "via voice command and voice recognition." So don't confuse it for Windows Hello which does biometric ID. It's possible that "Hello" is just the...

EU to remove geo-blocking of online streaming services within the region

The European Union is working on a law that will remove the geo-blocking by online streaming services within the region. Currently, streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime, Apple Music, etc. prevent the use of the service outside the home country. This means that if you are a Netflix subscriber in Germany you will not be able to access the content in Italy while travelling. With the new law, subscribers will be able to access all of their online streaming services while travelling, as long as they stay within the EU. This goes beyond just being able to access the service...

Facebook Lite now has 200 million active users

We've talked about Facebook's official Lite client in the past, as well as the separate Messenger Lite. Both are alternatives to Facebook's main application pair, which just seems to be on a mission to become the ultimate resource hog for the past few years. After a bit of a slow start and a few incremental releases, across what was initially supposed to only be developing markets, with slower devices and network speeds, the Facebook Lite app now seems to be pretty much globally available. Facebook features a link on its own website and if the Play Store just happens to deny you...

YouTube Go beta is live, lets you download videos for offline watching

Google just released its YouTube Go app for regions with slow internet. The beta app works similarly to the regular YouTube Android app but gives the option to download a video for offline viewing. There is Basic Quality and Standard Quality - around 144p and 360p - no HD quality available. This makes sense as YouTube Go will target users with low bandwidth. People can even share downloaded videos via Bluetooth to save even more of that precious data although Google has warned that a 15kb security check will need to be performed first. Click here to get the app though keep in...

Motorola starts a funny ad campaign for Moto Z

Lenovo is seriously struggling to turn Motorola around after acquiring it but at least its advertising game is on point. Motorola USA released a series of videos that are in the typical TV ad length of 30 seconds. The videos setup is in a marriage counselor's office where couples talk about their troubles at home - moving on to another one, fantasizing about others, running out of juice. Then the counselor asks are the people on the couch talking about a phone instead of real people and then adds the punch line - "Just buy a new phone". Cue laughter and some sweet Moto Z coverage along...

Nokia offers to acquire Comptel for $370M

Nokia is no longer making phones as the rights to the brand below to HMD Global, it's still making telecom network equipment and is aiming to buy Comptel, a fellow Finnish software company in order to stay relevant in the 4G mobile broadband equipment production. Nokia, Ericsson and Huawei are the three biggest players on the global market for telecom equipment. 4G connection is rapidly expanding across emerging markets and 5G is being tested in various cities. So in order to stay relevant, Nokia wants to acquire Comptel for $370 million cash. The offer is €3.04 per share, which...

The update brings along changes related to the modem software as well as some stability improvements. It is currently available on the Experimental track of the Concept firmware - it should be live on the Stable track sometime next week. This new update comes shortly after version 38.3.A.0.94 started rolling late last week. That update brought...
