Xiaomi Mi Max 3 arrives with 6.9" screen and 5,500 mAh battery

The Xiaomi Mi Max 3 was teased on Weibo and also showcased in press renders by Lin Bin, company founder. Today everything was wrapped up in an official event where the phone was finally unveiled. It has a 6.9" screen with Full HD+ resolution and 18:9 ratio, packing a massive 5,500 mAh battery and will be up for pre-order starting tomorrow. The new phone borrows plenty of specs from the Redmi Note 5. It runs the same Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 chipset with an octa-core CPU at 1.8 GHz. The dual camera setup is also the same - 12 MP main snapper with f/1.9 aperture, 1.4µm pixel size and...

Corning introduces Gorilla Glass 6

Today, Corning has announced a new version of Gorilla Glass, the sixth version, to be precise. Corning's scientists were able to engineer "an entirely new material" that would better survive multiple drops. Tests show that Gorilla Glass 6 survived fifteen drops from 1 meter before actually breaking. This is apparently twice as many drops that Gorilla Glass 5 can withstand. Gorilla Glass 6 is an entirely new glass composition that can be chemically strengthened to give it significantly higher levels of compression than is possible with Gorilla Glass 5. This enables Gorilla Glass 6 to be...

Android P Developer Preview 3 (beta 4) released for OnePlus 6

The latest version of the Android P Developer Preview 3 (Beta 4) is now available to download for the OnePlus 6. A OnePlus forum post has outlined all the changes made to this version of the Developer Preview, which does lag a little behind the Pixel beta releases since Oxygen OS has some changes made to it. The latest beta brings the OnePlus 6 to the July 2018 security bulletin and improves the general stability of the system. There's also a hotspot bug that is fixed and camera improvements. Third-party app compatibility has also improved as well as compatibility between the camera and...

Huawei has already sold 100 million devices in 2018

During the nova 3 launch event today, Huawei's consumer products boss Richard Yu was happy to report that his company has really outdone itself when it comes to smartphone sales this year. As of today Huawei has already sold 100 million devices. In 2018 it achieved that milestone in the least amount of time yet. Back in 2015 it was reached only on December 22; in 2016 it was October 14, while last year on September 12 Huawei announced 100 million sales. But we're only in July at the moment, so there's plenty of time left for Huawei to break its all-year sales record by the end...

Honor 10 is set to receive GPU Turbo and Automatic Image Stabilization in August

Huawei sub-brand Honor is announcing that two exciting new features are headed to its current flagship offering, the Honor 10, next month. One of those is the already widely publicized GPU Turbo, while the other is Automatic Image Stabilization (AIS) for the camera. GPU Turbo, in Honor's own words, is "a groundbreaking hardware-software integration and graphics processing technology". It "guarantees fast performance speeds and addresses the common performance issues that plague the mobile gamer's user experience". In short, it dramatically increases the graphics processing power and boosts...

Instagram working on incorporating token-based two-factor authentication

A couple of interesting bits of information coming out this week regarding Instagram. The company is finally working on incorporating a token-based two-factor authentication system in its app. This was discovered by an engineer within the app's code and posted on Twitter. Instagram is finally working on token-based two-factor authentication!! 🎉Thank you Instagram! I have been waiting for this since 2016! We finally won't have to rely our account's security on SMS! 😍 pic.twitter.com/u0iIPTaZO2— Jane Manchun Wong (@wongmjane) July 17, 2018 Currently, Instagram supports...

Our Moto G6 video review is up

You saw our Moto G6 Plus video review, now check out its smaller sibling - the Moto G6. In the video we answer your questions about navigating the UI using the fingerprint reader, charging, storage and more. The Moto G6 isn't an Android One phone, but as per Motorola tradition the software is mostly stock. The only changes are things like the fingerprint gestures (swipe right for recent apps, left for back, tap for home). We also cover the camera, both stills and videos. The camera app is another one of Moto's customizations and we think its HDR+ feature works quite well. The cam shoots...

Huawei formally announces the Kirin 710 12nm SoC

Today, Huawei announced its mid-tier nova 3i smartphone and the staple is the in-house HiSilicon Kirin 710 chipset. The Kirin 710 was a long overdue release as last year's 16nm Kirin 659 SoC was losing its competitive edge. The Kirin 710, on the other hand, aims to bring the 12nm node to the masses and according to Huawei, the new chipset delivers impressive performance and power efficiency gains. In digits, that means 75% better single-core and 68% improved multi-core speeds thanks to the four high-performance Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and four low-power Cortex-A53 cores...

Samsung reportedly aims to launch foldable phone in early 2019 with a 7" screen

Samsung is keen to be the first to launch a proper foldable phone (i.e. with a single, uninterrupted screen), claim insiders. This should happen early next year and the company believes this will reinvigorate the demand for high-priced phones. It won't happen right away, though. When the Samsung prototype (codenamed "Winner") goes to retail, it will reportedly target gamers first (an audience that is less price sensitive than most). It will cost at least $1,500, likely more than that. The display measures 7" when open, but folds like a wallet for portability, say people who have seen...

First render of Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2018) shows trimmed bezels

Samsung is prepping a bunch of new tablets - from the flagship Galaxy Tab S4 to a refresh of the Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (2018), the Galaxy Tab A2 (10.5) and Tab Advanced2 and the star of this story - the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2018). The Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2018) has been rumored to be a tame refresh of its predecessor - the key differences being a removal of the physical home button (in favor of on-screen one) and a slimmer profile, thanks to thinner bezels. An official-looking render has surfaced, visualizing what could prove to be the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2018). Judging by the image, the Galaxy...

Meizu 16's primary camera has f/1.8 aperture and 12MP resolution

Remember yesterday's post about the Meizu 16's AnTuTu score and sample camera photos? Well, someone was able to find the original images uploaded on Weibo by the CEO himself and their EXIF revealed interesting specs about the camera. According to the data, the Meizu 16 used a 12MP sensor to take the shots with an f/1.8 lens in front of it. The device is supposed to be out by the end of August coming in two versions - a standard one with Snapdragon 710 and a plus-sized model with Snapdragon 845 on board with additional cooling and an in-display fingerprint reader. Samsung and LG will adopt a "shotgun strategy" and release many new models

In order to prop up falling revenues from smartphone sales, both Samsung and LG have decided to adopt a "shotgun policy" - they will launch as many new models as possible. Based on Strategy Analytics data, Samsung's and LG's market shares in Q1 2018 shrunk at a time when Xiaomi doubled its share and Huawei and Apple are on the rise. Both companies have been focusing on their high end lines, where margins are considerably higher compared to their low cost offerings. But that will change as the two Korean giants will release new phones in all segments, sources claim. Huawei's flagship...

OxygenOS 5.1.9 for OnePlus 6 improves camera quality

OnePlus just pushed an update to OxygenOS 5.1.9 for its latest flagship, the OnePlus 6, and it's pretty similar to the one introduced in the Open Beta version of the OS for the OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T yesterday. It should finally address the well-known camera issue producing the so-called "oil painting effect". Presumably, the update will also optimize the overall image quality as well but we wonder if DxOMark tested the device with the new update or missed it by a few days. Anyway, the changelog also mentions the support for Google Lens on the native camera app. Additionally, the...

Google faces a €4.3 billion fine from the EU

We've heard about the EU competition commission chief's disapproval of Google's practices just last week and now, we are seeing the results. This morning the European Commission had slapped the search giant with a record-breaking €4.3 billion fine. The California-based company was found guilty of using its mobile OS to "cement its dominant position in general internet search." The EU's ruling gives Google 90 days to change its practice or face even more severe penalties of up to 5% of its average daily revenue. But even if the 90 days change is met, the initial fine is still the...

Huawei Nova 3i announced with Kirin 710

Huawei listed the Nova 3 last Wednesday as another variation of the P20 Lite. Now an ever liter version, called Huawei Nova 3i, has appeared in the Philippines. Unlike the Nova 3, the new phone has 4 GB RAM, basic 16 MP + 2 MP back camera setup, and a dual combo of 24 MP + 2 MP for selfies on the front. The Huawei Nova 3i is the first smartphone with the new Kirin 710 SoC built on the 12nm process by HiSilicon. It has four Cortex-A73 at 2.2 GHz and four more Cortex-A53 at 1.7 GHz for power efficiency. The screen is 6.3" LCD of FullHD+ resolution and 19:9 ratio like the original...

Apple releases iOS 12 developer beta 4

Apple further refined iOS 12 by releasing iOS 12 developer beta 4. As its name implies, this is a developer beta release, but barring any major issues, Apple will release Public beta 3 to the public within the next couple of days. iOS 12 promises to improve performance, especially on older Apple devices while iPad gains iPhone X style gestures and UI changes readying the OS for new Face ID equipped iPads. Additional enhancements within iOS 12 come in the form of Grouped Notifications, Screen Time for highlighting and controlling our time spent interacting with our devices. While the...

Nokia X5 now official with Helio P60, dual cameras and 84% screen-to-body ratio

After a failed attempt on July 11, HMD Global finally announced its latest mid-ranger, the Nokia X5 (Nokia 5.1 Plus). Most of the rumors so far turned out to be true and many will be disappointed by the inclusion of the notch. However, Nokia X5 is built around a 5.86-inch HD+ (720x1520 pixels) display (19:9 aspect ratio) with 2.D curved glass on the edges and boasts an 84% screen-to-body ratio. It's quite impressive for a device in this price range. The specs sheet continues with MediaTek Helio P60 chipset paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage and there's also a...

Samsung reopens Apple-dissing campaign in latest ad

Samsung is refueling its Apple-trolling campaign under the slogan Upgrade to Galaxy. In its latest ad, dubbed Ingenius: Speed, Samsung is shining a bright light on the iPhone X's lack of Gigabit LTE support. The iPhone X has inferior LTE download speeds than the Samsung Galaxy Note8, Galaxy S8/S8+ and Galaxy S9/S9+ and that's no secret. The difference in download is around 2x with the Samsung posting around 100 Mbps download whereas the iPhone X topping out at about 50 Mbps. Upload speeds are about the same - yay!

Tizen-powered Gear S4 will be called Galaxy Watch, launches with Galaxy Note9

Samsung's next smartwatch won't be called Gear anymore. According to a report from Korea what was rumored as the Samsung Gear S4 will be called Galaxy Watch and it will launch alongside the Galaxy Note9. Despite the name change from Gear to Galaxy, the new smartwatch will still run Tizen OS, instead of Android Wear, and Samsung will reportedly bundle it with some impressive apps for training. Samsung will reportedly announce the Galaxy Watch with the Galaxy Note9 on August 9, start pre-orders for both on August 14 and start shipping both on August 24. Source | Via

Mophie releases power banks with built-in Lightning cable

Mophie introduced its new series of power banks called Powerstation. It has four models, priced between $60 and $100, with a charge up to 10,000mAh and built-in Lightning cable in two of them. It also has a Lightning input, USB-A output and comes in various neat colors. There is, unsurprisingly, an LED power indicator that tells you how much charge is left when you press a little button. Mophie also boasts about the triple-test certified lithium-polymer batteries that "ensure peak performance and safe operation." The power banks have Priority+ Charging which first prioritizes the...

An online retailer takes pre-orders for the Sony Xperia XZ3, price and specs revealed

A British online retailer claims to have the key specs of the device along with the official pricing for the UK. And that's not all - there's a page open up for pre-orders that actually works. Still, it seems a bit fishy considering the Xperia XZ3 is due for release during this year's IFA in September. Anyway, let's assume the store has a solid source. The listing reveals some of the key specs, which are in contrast to what we've heard so far. We've had a GFXBench listing pointing at QHD+ screen (1440 x 2880) and a 5.9-inch display. Then again, Sony has never had a QHD screen on its...
