According to a new report from market research firm Strategy Analytics, Apple retained the top spot in the US smartphone market in Q3, although both shipments and market share were down. While the shipments figure for the Cupertino-based company stood at 12 million (down from 13 million in the same quarter last year), market share was 30.4% (a drop of around 2%). Samsung also retained the second spot, but both shipments and market share were up - from 9.7 to 9.9 million, and 24.2% to 25.1%, respectively. LG, ZTE, and Motorola also held their rankings to round up the top...

Twitter flips the switch for the new 280 character limit

Today, Twitter has lifted the 140-character limit for its general users to 280. The micro-blogging platform first tested the new limit on a select group of Twitter users, particularly those with large amounts of followers and celebrities. The test period took place over about six weeks, during which Twitter has collected some interesting data. Only 5% of tweets sent were longer than 140 characters while only 2% were over 190. Mind you, this data was collected before the limit was changed for the vast majority of Twitter users. We'd be interested to learn if we'll see long tweets all the...

iPhone X's 4K video compared to a Panasonic GH5's

The iPhone X is making its way to the masses and with it, is a camera with excellent performance. It already got the highest marks from DxOMark for taking photos, but its video performance was also very good. The iPhone X is also among the first smartphones to be able to record in 4K resolution at 60fps. Scores aside, Fstoppers on YouTube made a comparison video where the newly released iPhone X is pinned up against the Panasonic Lumix GH5. While that doesn't necessarily mean a professional should buy an iPhone X instead of a camera, you may be surprised at exactly what kind of video the...

Made for Huawei certified accessories are coming

As it continues to eye the No.1 smartphone maker spot, Huawei is apparently ready to bet big on accessories too. This doesn't mean that the company necessarily plans to offer more such products itself. But if a new report from China is to be believed, a Made for Huawei program for certified accessories is coming very soon. As the name implies, it will emulate what Apple and most recently Google have been doing - certifying specific accessories for use with its smartphones. If they undergo the procedure, accessory makers will be able to slap a Made for Huawei badge on their boxes, which in...

Huawei FIG-AL00 from all sides The listing does not reveal much - the new Huawei device will have two SIM slots and will run Android. YouTube for iOS now supports full screen on the iPhone X

The 19.5:9 aspect ratio of the Apple iPhone X is not quite perfect for watching videos when the majority of content out there is at 16:9. Such content covers the equivalent of a 5" screen (a bit less actually) due to letterboxing. The latest YouTube update allows you to get rid of that and use the screen fully, horns and all. You lose a bit from the top and the bottom of the video while the sides lose bits due to the notch and the rounded corners. Still, if you want to, you can. All you need to do is a pinch gesture to fill up the screen. Check the App Store for updates, the new...

Measuring the bezels of the iPhone X - can Apple win the bezel-less war?

"Our vision has always been to create an iPhone that is entirely screen" says Apple about the iPhone X. An admirable goal, though Apple is hardly a pioneer here - Sharp went "bezel-less" years ago, Xiaomi pushed the concept into the public consciousness. Still, you can't deny the X is a massive improvement over all iPhones dating back to the original. We decided to measure Apple's achievement - how thin are those bezels? Is it a huge improvement over the iPhone 8 Plus? Obviously yes for the top and bottom bezels, but we think those are of secondary importance. It's the side bezels...

Amazon launches Fire TV Stick Basic Edition in over 100 countries

Amazon has launched a new version of the Fire TV Stick for the global market, called the Fire TV Stick Basic Edition. This media streaming player will be available in over a 100 countries worldwide where Amazon launched its Amazon Prime Video service last year. The "new" Basic Edition is essentially the second generation Fire TV Stick but without the Alexa functionality, as many of these 100 countries do not have Alexa. The remote it comes with lacks the microphone and the Alexa button. While that is fine, the device is strangely also available in the US, which does have Alexa....

Tablet shipments keep went down in Q3, but Apple gained

The third quarter of 2017 ended with 40 million tablets shipped globally, IDC said in its latest report. Growing demand for phones and traditional PCs strengthening their positions have been pointed out as the main reasons for the shipments decline for a 12th consecutive quarter. According to the analysts, the fall is 5.4% from 42.3 million tablets shipped in Q3 2016. Four of the Top 5 companies posted an increase in shipments year-over-year. Apple shipped 10.3 million tablets, accounting for 25.8%. Samsung came in second with 6 million units or 15%, with Amazon completing the Top 3....

DxO awards iPhone X still camera the highest score yet

The best display and the best still camera belong to the same phone - the Apple iPhone X. Or at least if you believe DxO to be the ultimate authority on this, which you probably shouldn't. Anyway, the company gave the iPhone X 101 points for photography, edging out Samsung Galaxy Note8 and Huawei Mate 10 Pro (both scored 100). DxO commended the iPhone X for very good exposure and accurate colors in all lighting conditions. The camera offered good detail with and without zoom and created natural-looking bokehs. What DxO did not like was the "occasionally" slow autofocus and some...

AT&T Exclusive no-more: Galaxy S8 Active coming to T-Mobile and Sprint

The Samsung Galaxy S "Active" model has been around ever since the Galaxy S4 Active. The Galaxy S' Active series offered the latest flagship features and specs of the concurrent-generation Galaxy S model and repackaged it into a rugged beast - one that would feature a larger battery, Military-spec durability, and water resistance. The situation since then has been that AT&T was the only carrier in the United States to carry the ruggedized flavor of the Galaxy flagship. It catered to a niche market of folks who enjoyed fishing, hiking, or camping, as well as those with physically demanding...

KGI: Apple to launch two OLED phones in 2018

Apple launched the iPhone X and already is preparing for the next-year flagship. According to KGI analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Cupertino is preparing two OLED phones for 2018. The report also suggests that the phones might return to the stainless steel frames to improve data transmission quality. Top: iPhone 8 Plus • Bottom: iPhone X The iPhone X currently has a steel frame around the edges with antenna bands dividing it in four. If the prediction is accurate, we might see a new appearance of the phone's casing. Currently, only the iPhone X comes with an OLED screen. According to...

New Google Pixel 2 ad focuses on phone's key features

It's been a troubled few weeks for Google when it comes to their latest Pixel 2 flagship smartphone, but that doesn't take away the fact that it's an impressive device.
