Weekly poll results: Motorola Razr 2019 gets the design right, needs to work on the specs

This year we've seen a strange mix of nostalgia and futuristic designs. Nintendo portable is the top console and a Moto Razr phone is causing a stir - if we didn't know better, we'd think it's 2004 again. The reborn Motorola Razr 2019 is a foldable phone - the first new-gen clamshell to be officially unveiled. This design perfectly combines the super tall aspect ratios that are popular today with portability that is out of reach for the gangly non-folding 21:9 phones. The the good news for Motorola is that there are very few skeptics - only 6% still maintain that foldable phones are not...

Flashback: Motorola RAZR V3 - the little clamshell that could

Can a phone be too successful? It's a weird thing to think about, but the Motorola RAZR may have been so successful that it tanked its parent company. Motorola invented the cell phone and the StarTAC was one of the very first flip phones. However, the most memorable phone it made is certainly the original RAZR. Confusingly called "V3", it came out in 2004. It had a sleek profile and was marketed as a fashion phone. While it started off as a premium device, its price fell over time and two years after launch Motorola had sold 50 million units. Motorola RAZR V3 Motorola kept...

Visionox introduces a foldable clamshell smartphone and rollable OLED panel

During the First World Conference on Display Industry in China, Visionox showcased two new interesting products - a foldable clamshell smartphone and a rollable OLED panel hinting at even more interesting designs in the next one or two years. And just a quick reminder - this is the company that supplies the futuristic panel for the Xiaomi Mi Mix Alpha. The foldable clamshell prototype that was shown on site looks a lot like the new Motorola Razr 2019 but when you look closely, the design looks more polished and resembles a normal handset from 2019. The AMOLED display used for the prototype...

One percent of the app publishers account for 80% of the total downloads in Q3 2019

According to extensive research done by Sensor Tower, about 1% of the top app publishers across Google's Play Store and Apple's App Store generated 80% of the total app downloads in Q3 2019 leaving the rest of the market fighting for the remaining 20%. The 80% translate into 29.6 billion downloads and the available apps in Google Play and App Store were 3.4 million in 2018, which is a staggering 65% increase from 2014. Unfortunately, though, only 26% of the apps had at least 1,000 downloads in 2018 - a significant decline from the 30% in 2014. This means that more apps get lost in the app...

US carriers can no longer purchase Huawei and ZTE equipment with federal subsidy

And while things are slowly going back to normal around the Huawei ban, the US FCC is making things harder on the other end. The latest development around the US-China trade war is that USA operators can no longer purchase Huawei and ZTE equipment using federal subsidy funds. As of now, only select operators with approval can purchase Huawei and ZTE equipment and they can still do it but not with federal subsidy. In fact, FCC's ruling obliges the US carriers to replace its current equipment bought with federal funds, which would cost around $2 billion, according to FCC's...
