Huawei Y8s is official, brings two selfie cameras

Last month we received some info on an upcoming Huawei Y8s with an actual notch on the front and a dual camera on the back. Today the device is finally official - it was listed on Huawei's website in the Arab country of Jordan. The phone brings a 6.5" LCD screen with Full HD+ resolution. It has a relatively small notch on the top, where we have two selfie cameras on both sides of the earpiece. There is a main 8 MP f/2.0 shooter, assisted by 2 MP f/2.4 depth sensor for background blur. The main cameras are also two - while the secondary snapper is the very same as the one on the...

Honor X10 with 5G support is coming on May 20

Huawei sub-brand Honor today announced it will unveil a new smartphone on May 20, dubbed Honor X10. Honor took to Weibo to make this announcement, where it also shared a poster which confirms the X10 will support 5G networks. The company didn't share any other details about the X10, but thanks to TENAA, we know the smartphone will be powered by the Kirin 820 SoC and pack a 6.63" LCD of FullHD+ resolution. Honor X10 images shared by TENAA The Honor X10 will sport a 40MP Sony IMX600y main camera on the back which will be joined by an 8MP ultrawide and 2MP macro or depth...

Huawei FreeBuds 3i are truly wireless and have active noise cancellation for £89.99

Huawei has unveiled the FreeBuds 3i for European markets today. These are truly wireless Bluetooth earbuds with active noise cancellation built-in. That instantly makes them compete head to head with Apple's AirPods Pro. And when you look at the design of the FreeBuds 3i, that point will be fully driven home. The AirPods have clearly served as inspiration here, but let's not let that get in the way. The FreeBuds 3i each feature a 3-mic system, of which two mics are outward-facing, and one is inward-facing. The former pick up your voice, the latter receives your voice conducted inside...

iPhone SE (2020) gets torn down on video

The new iPhone SE (2020) has been the talk of the town ever since it was unveiled in mid-April, and the most affordable phone in the company's roster is clearly getting a lot of attention sales-wise as well. It makes sense - it's an intriguing mix of the latest chipset paired with a shell that is a few years old, all for a very good price (at least considering this is an iPhone). We've already seen it undergo a teardown by iFixit, and today it's time for JerryRigEverything's video version, in which you get to see what it's like getting on the inside of the new iPhone SE. The iPhone...

DxOMark unimpressed with the Honor V30 Pro's selfie cameras

DxOMark has completed its review of the Honor V30 Pro's front cameras and the conclusion isn't overly positive. The pair of cameras got a 70 photo and 85 video score for a total of 76, which puts the V30 Pro mid-table, behind such devices as the Honor 20 Pro, the Huawei P30 Pro and even a Google Pixel 2. That middling result's in high contrast to the Honor V30 Pro's main camera review, which placed the phone in sixth place. In its review DxOMark praised the face exposure, the low noise in photos, the white balance, and effective stabilization in videos. Points were taken away for the...

Top Google exec caught using a Pixel 4a

The Google Pixel 4a is coming on May 22 and it will have a punch hole for the selfie camera. The latter fact became clear from a seemingly innocent shared screenshot by Google's SVP of Hardware, Rick Osterloh. The screenshot of him getting an Earth badge on Fitbit has a blank space in the top left corner that's reserved for the physical punch hole, which pushes the clock and the rest of the status bar to the side. Earth badge on Fitbit! pic.twitter.com/TvUs4dYQF6— Rick Osterloh (@rosterloh) May 4, 2020 That's not all we know about the upcoming Google Pixel 4a. There have been two...

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip sales go up in March as the Galaxy S20 flagships struggle

The Samsung Galaxy Z Flip (which launched in mid-February) seems to be doing better than the company's first foldable phone - 230,000 units were sold in the month of March alone, 56.1% up from the February numbers. For comparison, Samsung sold 400,000 Galaxy Folds in all of 2019. Still, that's a minor win as the big money maker, the Galaxy S20 series, is not doing so hot. A report from Korea states that sales are 35% down from what the S10 managed last year. While COVID-19 related lockdowns certainly had an effect, the overall sales of Samsung smartphones are down 22.4% - a steep drop,...

Microsoft: Windows 10X is also coming to single screen devices

After Microsoft delayed the Surface Neo indefinitely, questions about the Windows 10X development rose. After all, this version of Windows was designed to work with dual-screen devices. Well, Microsoft has now confirmed that Windows 10X is still happening but it will change its focus. According to a short Microsoft blog post, the company is going to optimize the upcoming version of its OS for single screen devices and touchscreens, meaning laptops, tablets and hybrids. It would "leverage the power of the cloud". However, no specifics have been given but it's clear that Windows 10X will...

Samsung Internet beta adds protection against Back button hijacking

The Samsung Internet browser may be based on Chromium, but it offers a few extra goodies over Chrome. Things like support for add-ons and privacy-oriented features. The upcoming version 11.2.1.3 (currently in Beta) introduces a new feature that will prevent sites from messing up the Back button. Sometimes you accidentally land on a shady site only to find out that pressing the Back button just reloads the page or worse, takes you to a different page that's just ads top to bottom. This new feature is somewhat confusingly named "Block unwanted webpages", but if you read the...

Meizu 17 series will debut with Flyme 8.1 based on Android 10

Meizu is gearing up to release its latest flagships with the 17 series on May 8. We've come across numerous leaks so far and the latest one courtesy of the brand's official Weibo profile confirms both phones will ship with Meizu's custom Flyme 8.1 user interface based on Android 10. The company's most recent version Flyme 8 was still based on Android 9 Pie. Meizu also holds a poor track record of providing timely updates which means there is little hope of a future major Android update coming to the 17 series soon. Sadly, the new poster did not reveal any of the new Flyme 8.1...

The Tecno Spark 5 Air is a 7-inch phone with Android 10 Go edition

While it's billed as a smartphone, the Tecno Spark 5 Air definitely blurs the lines with tablets with its 7" screen. The Air is pretty similar to the Tecno Spark 5 from yesterday, which also has a pretty roomy screen with a 6.6" panel. Unfortunately, the increase in screen size did not come with a bump in resolution and 720 x 1,640px is quite a stretch on 7". Tecno Spark 5 Air The two phones are fairly similar, both feature an 8MP selfie camera. This time it's in a teardrop notch and the dual LED flash embedded in the top bezel puts some distance between the two LEDs, which...

Pixel 4 XL prototype with a gray paint job surfaces - a color that was never released

There's a missing step between Clearly White and Just Black and it's not Oh So Orange. We're talking about the color options for the Google Pixel 4 XL, of course - apparently, there could have been another color, gray. This was discovered by Twitter user @akes29 who spotted the unreleased prototype on Alibaba. And it sure is a prototype, the label on its back makes it clear that this device has not been certified by the FCC and should not be sold, instead it is intended for internal testing only. Anyway, this unreleased color scheme features a dark gray back and a light gray button (the...

Huawei unveils Y6P and Y5P entry-level phones alongside MatePad T8 tablet

Earlier today we came across a pretty detailed leak about the entry-level Huawei Y6P and Y5P smartphones and now without much fanfare, Huawei officially unveiled both phones alongside the MatePad T8 tablet in Romania. Huawei Y6P The Y6P is built around a 6.3-inch IPS panel with an HD+ resolution and waterdrop notch for its 8MP selfie cam. Around the back, we find a 13MP main camera alongside a 5MP ultrawide module and a 2MP depth helper. There's also a capacitive fingerprint scanner. Under the hood, the Y6P brings the Helio P22 chipset alongside 3GB RAM and 64GB of storage, which...

Apple and Google release their APIs to fight COVID-19, ban location tracking

Apple and Google joined efforts fighting the COVID-19 spread by introducing their cross-platform API called Exposure Notification to help accelerate the development of apps that track people with positive coronavirus results in each country. Of course, while this may sound great for fighting the infection, it's a privacy concern for a lot of people. That's why both companies have compiled a list of requirements. First and foremost, the API can only be used for the development of apps for the official government public health authority to stop the spread of COVID-19. Also, no location...

Unknown vivo smartphone visits Geekbench with Snapdragon chipset and 8GB RAM

An unknown vivo smartphone bearing model code V2012A has popped up on Geekbench with key specs. The V2012A runs Android 10, has 8GB RAM onboard, and is powered by an octa-core processor with a base frequency of 1.8GHz on a Qualcomm chipset. The benchmark database doesn't reveal the name of the chipset, but the processor identifier hints the smartphone is likely powered by the Snapdragon 765G SoC - the same chipset that powers the vivo Z6 5G. Having a Snapdragon 765G SoC at the helm also means the vivo V2012A will likely support 5G networks. Details are scarce about this...

MediaTek officially unveils the Helio G85 chipset

Xiaomi unveiled the Redmi Note 9 last week with a chipset called Helio G85 by Mediatek. Today the Taiwanese chip manufacturer has finally detailed the SoC itself - it comes with slightly faster GPU than the Helio G80, but keeps the same CPU. The Helio G85 comes with two Cortex-A75 cores running at 2.0GHz and six Cortex-A55 units at 1.8GHz. The Mali-G52 GPU now is clocked at 1GHz, unlike the Helio G80 that was doing 950MHz. The chip has all of the features from the Helio G80 like VoW (voice on wakeup) and enhanced HyperEngine Game technology. Promo image with all the neat features...

Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra's selfie camera ties for second in DxOMark's tests

The Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra is tied for second in DxOMark's selfie camera tests. With a score of 100, it is three points behind the Huawei P40 Pro and even with the Huawei nova 6 5G. The Ultra is only a point ahead of the Galaxy Note10+ 5G, despite much improved hardware (which suggests that the software needs tuning). The Galaxy S20 Ultra has a unique front camera in the line-up with a large 1/2.65" sensor with 40MP resolution (0.7µm pixels) and a Quad Bayer filter. This camera operates in two modes - with 32mm focal length when shooting selfies of just yourself (outputting 6.5MP images)...
