Counterclockwise: the rise and fall of Galaxy S, Lumia, Xperia Z and others

It has been a while since we last took a trip down memory lane, but the impending Mobile World Congress sparked some memories. The MWC has been the traditional stomping ground of the Samsung Galaxy S phone. Last year, it was the Galaxy S7. The year before was the Galaxy S6. Three years ago, Galaxy S5 rumors were flying. Four years ago, the Galaxy S4 didn't come to the MWC - instead, it was unveiled in New York. This year it may be the same, Samsung will bring miscellaneous devices to the MWC and leave the Galaxy S8 for a March reveal. Speaking of four years ago, it was when the original...

Sunday Q&A

Welcome to the week 7 edition of our Sunday Q&A. This week we talk the Samsung Galaxy S7 edge Nougat update, the resolution vs pixel size debate and benchmarks. Ravi: With the release of the Huawei Mate 9 and the Cortex A73 cores inside it, the mighty Kryo cores inside Snapdragon 82x chips finally had a competitor that fared better in benchmarks. However, even the latest and greatest offering from ARM didn't even come close to the raw single-core computing power offered by A10 fusion cores inside iPhone 7/7+. My question is how did Apple manage to create a chipset that is way...

Weekly poll: have you switched to a phone with USB-C yet?

Some of us are working on an HTC 10 evo review and have to deal with the reality having USB-C as the only port. No, not even a 3.5mm headphone jack. But that's not the only issue, we have plenty of microUSB cables in the office while our USB-C cables are stolen by gremlins every night. The transition period is difficult, but it should be worth it - USB-C is the way of the future, the one cable to rule them all. And microUSB is about to go the way of miniUSB, so sooner or later you will be dragged into the C-world, whether you want to or not. Have you started the transition yet, do you...

Top 10 trending phones of week 7

Samsung reclaimed the top spot after 4 weeks of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 domination. The Galaxy J7 Prime was in second place last week, but in week 7 it rose to the top. Second came the Galaxy C9 Pro, while the Galaxy A5 (2017) made is a clean Samsung sweep on the podium. Moving down we see the Nokia 6, which continues to be a very interesting device despite being limited to a single market. The previous leader Redmi Note 4 has dropped to fifth, while its Snapdragon version fell off the chart entirely. The Samsung Galaxy J7 (2016) comes in sixth, edging out the Oppo F1s and Xiaomi Redmi...

Weekly poll results: 1080p screens are good enough, there's not much need for 4K

It seems that we've hit a wall when it comes to mobile screen resolutions - not that the technology isn't there, it's the purpose that is missing. Sure, VR enthusiasts (15% of voters) are excited for 4K 2160p screens since virtual reality headsets need all the pixels they can get. However, as some of you rightfully pointed out, Sony has no interest in mobile VR since it will compete with the PlayStation VR. Samsung has no such qualms and works with Oculus (both on the Rift and Gear VR) and seems to be working on a standalone headset. Asus and others are allegedly working on standalone...
