AT&T decides not to sell Huawei Mate 10 in the US after all

Rumors about Huawei being in talks with AT&T regarding flagship smartphone sales first popped up last March. We then saw firmware files confirming a deal, and everything seemed to be on track. A few days before New Year's Eve word got out that the Mate 10 Pro launch at AT&T got pushed to February, but now it's apparently never going to happen. According to a new report from the Wall Street Journal, AT&T has decided to back out of the deal with the Chinese smartphone maker. The news comes ahead of Huawei's CES press conference, which takes place tomorrow. That was widely expected to be when...

Oreo still hasn't reached 1% market share, Google's monthly report reveals

Since it's the beginning of a new month, you can be sure of two things: that a new Android security update is out for supported Nexus and Pixel devices, and that Google's updated its Android distribution chart. This shows us how much of the market each individual version of the OS takes up. As usual, the latest iteration is growing, but at an excruciatingly slow pace. Oreo was at 0.5% a month ago, and now it's reached a whopping 0.7%. At this rate, many months will pass before it even arrives at 10%. That's always been the way things are in the Android world, however. The most...

Galaxy Note8 in the UK gets first update since September

Certain owners of Samsung's Galaxy Note8 may already be receiving Android 8.0 Oreo in some parts of the world, but if you live in the UK and purchased your handset unlocked the situation is very different. The SIM-free Note8 units in Britain haven't been graced with a software update of any kind since last September. While they're still not getting Oreo, today a new release has finally become available for the unlocked Note8 in the UK. It brings with it the December 1 security patch level, as well as the Secure Wi-Fi feature and improvements for the Live Focus functionality. As usual, you...

Apple outs iOS 11.2.2 and macOS 10.13.2 supplemental update to mitigate Spectre vulnerability

Apple has already confirmed that Macs and iOS devices are affected by the recently disclosed Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities that have taken the tech world by storm in the past few days. And while it's already applied patches to mitigate Meltdown (in iOS 11.2 and macOS 10.13.2), today it's time for a couple of software updates to go out in order to address Spectre. iOS 11.2.2 and a supplemental update for macOS High Sierra 10.13.2 have been released with that exact aim in mind. Both of these are already available to download and install onto supported devices. Safari has been bumped...

Google combines all its payment services under Google Pay

Google has announced that it is collating all its payment systems, primarily Google Wallet and Android Pay, under one brand called Google Pay. Henceforth, the company will use the Google Pay logo and branding wherever the aforementioned payment systems appeared. As far as the users are concerned, nothing really has changed for them. Just that instead of seeing Android Pay logo when paying for things with NFC or Google Wallet while purchasing content on the Play Store, users will now see the universal Google Pay logo. Google has announced that Google Pay is already available at...

Vivo will reveal first phone with in-screen fingerprint reader on January 10

When Qualcomm unveiled tech that supports fingerprints under the display, vivo called dibs. It even showed off a working prototype a few days later. Now the company is ready to take the next step. Vivo posted a teaser image with the tagline "Unlock the Future" and promised to unveil the first smartphone with an in-screen fingerprint reader on January 10. This suggests that we'll be seeing the finished article rather than another prototype. Vivo's teaser for the first phone with an in-screen fingerprint reader The vivo phone may not be alone, however. Synaptics also promised a...

Asus Zenfone Max Plus makes its way to North America

Asus launched the Zenfone Max Plus (M1) in November in Russia and expanded its availability across other European regions by the middle of December. At CES 2018 the company announced that it will also arrive to the US and Canada. The Max Plus (M1) will cost $229 for the 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage version. It also has a rather disappointing MT6750T chipset and Android 7.0 Nougat. The key selling point of the phone is a powerful 4,130 mAh battery. Display-wise, the phone has 5.7" panel with 18:9 ratio and a Full HD+ resolution of 1080 x 2160 pixels. There is a dual cam setup on the back...

The Garmin Forerunner 645 Music smartwatch can store up to 500 songs

Garmin watches are some of the best ones you can take on your daily run - but until now you had to bring your own music player. The Forerunner 645 Music changes that by providing offline storage for 500 songs. You just need to pair it with some comfy Bluetooth earphones and you're good to go. The watch will support contactless payments soon, so it shouldn't be too jealous of smartwatches. Admittedly on both counts it uses less popular services - iHeartRadio and Deezer, but no Spotify. And it's Garmin Pay, which doesn't have the penetration of competing services. Garmin...

Intel announces new 8th gen Core processor with AMD Radeon RX Vega M graphics

Intel has announced a new series of 8th generation Core processors with AMD Radeon RX Vega M graphics. This is a collaboration between Intel CPU division the graphics division at AMD, something no one really saw coming. This new series of processors is designed for use within integrated systems, such as AIOs, notebooks and NUCs. The processor consists of three parts, the Intel Core Kaby Lake-G series CPU, the AMD GPU and 4GB HBM2 VRAM. The GPU and VRAM communicate over something called Embedded Multi-Die Interconnect Bridge or EMIB, a high-speed interface designed specifically for...

Samsung unveils The Wall: a whopping 146" TV with MicroLED display

Aptly named "The Wall", Samsung's 146" TV is a marvel. It's the world's first modular MicroLED TV and while it's huge, it's really the technology behind it that has us more excited. You may have heard of MicroLED as a potential future replacement of OLED (on phones and elsewhere). It is similar in that each pixel is its own light so it offers perfect black levels (and doesn't need a backlight like LCD, no color filters either). On top of that it will offer superior brightness, power efficiency and (more importantly) longer life than current OLED displays. Samsung used micrometer-scale...

Motorola has been really active in the last 12 months with launching a dozen of phones in all price segments. The company is now pushing three of the most popular phones with a discount on its website. The Moto Z2 Play, Moto X4, and Moto G5 Plus get price cuts between $20 and $100. The Moto G5S Plus with 32 GB storage is now $210 instead of $230. The 64 GB version is $260, down from $300. Color options for the midranger are Lunar Grey and Fine Gold. The Moto X4 is offered on the Motorola website in only one variation - 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage. Instead of $400, the phone is now...

Huawei Honor 9 Lite might be headed to India this month

The Huawei Honor 9 Lite was announced a week before New Year's Eve and Chinese retailers will start shipping units in a few days (with pre-orders from January 9 to 12). The phone might also launch in India this month. Huawei announced that it will bring a phone with dual rear and dual front cameras to India. It didn't give more details than that, though we're most likely talking about the same phone. Huawei Honor 9 Lite It's not the Huawei Mate 10 Lite (aka Honor 9i) because it is already available there. The Honor 9 Lite is slightly smaller (5.65" vs. 5.9" display), but...

LG G7 will go on sale in April, sources from Korean carriers claim

A new name and a new venue are in store for the phone that probably won't be called LG G7. A Korean carrier official stated that the new flagship will become available in April. Another source adds that the phone will be unveiled in the middle of March instead of the MWC (like the G6). The Korean launch will be on April 20, yet another source claims and if tradition holds, the phone will reach Europe and the US a couple of weeks later. That's what happened with LG G6 last year - it was unveiled in February (at the MWC), hit the Korean market on March 10 and reached Europe at the end of the...

Nvidia has announced a new series of gaming monitors that will really step up your gaming monitors. I'm talking 65-inch, 120Hz, 4K and HDR with Nvidia's G-SYNC technology and on top of that it has Android TV built-in. The BFGD have a 4K HDR panel with full-array backlighting, 1000-nits peak brightness and full DCI-P3 coverage for all your HDR content. For gaming, the panels have a 120Hz refresh rate with...

HTC ends poor year on a low note: revenues drop to lowest level in 13 years

HTC ended 2017 on a low note - December saw revenues of NTD 4.02 billion or $136 million dollars. That's a sharp drop of 29% compared to November and an even worse 37.3% compared to December 2016. Note: this are unaudited numbers. The HTC U11+, which might have been Google's Pixel 2 XL in another life, went on sale in December but did not help to reverse HTC's downward trajectory. 2017 was a poor year for the long-time smartphone maker. Its total revenue for the year was NTD 62.12 billion ($2.1 / €1.8 billion), the lowest number in the last 13 years. That was back in the O2 XDA...

No Dolby Atmos on Oreo-powered Galaxy S8/S8+, Samsung says

Late last week, a leaked stable Oreo ROM for Samsung Galaxy S8 revealed Dolby Atmos support. However, the South Korean company clarified that there are no plans to add such a feature. The comment was made by a member of Samsung's UK Beta Team. Last week's leak even included a screenshots of the feature, so Samsung denial comes as a bit of surprise. It's possible the feature will eventually arrive, just that the first stable Oreo build won't have it. Thanks for the tip, Pranjal!!!

HTC U11+ may get new Red color option

The HTC U11+ was launched last month, and it currently comes in three color options - Translucent Black, Ceramic Black, Amazing Silver. Now a listing on a retailer's website indicates that there may soon be a red color variant as well. As you can see in the screenshot below, the list of color options contains an entry called 'Pre-Sale Red'. The retailer is only taking-pre orders so there's no saying yet when exactly the red U11+ will hit the shelves. At this point, there's no information on when the new red color will be officially unveiled and whether or not it'll carry a...

Nokia 6 (2018) units getting Oreo update out of the box

The Nokia 6 (2018) comes with Android 7.1 Nougat pre-installed. However, HMD promised to quickly push out the Oreo update to the device. Well, the good news is that has already started happening. Latest reports say Nokia 6 (2018) units are getting Android 8.0 on very first boot. Reports also confirm that the device comes with optional support for Google services in China. This means those in the Asian country will be able to install the Google Play Store on their units. It's worth mentioning that once installed, you'll not be able to un-install the Play Store apk. LG showcases new rollable 65" OLED display

LG Display used CES 2018 in Las Vegas to officially unveil its new OLED displays - one of them being a 65-inch 4K flexible screen that can be rolled like a newspaper. The other is an 88" 8K OLED panel that we told you about last week. The flexibility of the 65" OLED display makes it easier to transport or store in the corner. Its small size allows for better space utilization, meaning you can take the TV anytime, anywhere and "enjoy bright, high-resolution content". LG Display will also showcase its latest upgrades of the IPS technology. The panels now have IPS...

It's Xperia day today as Sony goes official with three new phones at the CES 2018 in Las Vegas. Two sizes of mid-tier handsets, the Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 Ultra, and the entry-level Xperia L2 usher in a new design language and a focus on endurance. Sony Xperia XA2 and Xperia XA2 ultra The Xperia XA2 and XA2 Ultra come with a Snapdragon 630 chipset in charge of doing the math, replacing the Mediatek Helio P20 of last year's models - 14nm vs. 16nm silicon. LG Aristo 2 leaks, coming to T-Mobile and Metro PCS

The sequel to last year's LG Aristo is coming soon. The retail packaging and the user-manual for the device leaked, revealing the handset's design and key specifications. The leak reveals the Aristo 2 is powered by Snapdragon 425 SoC and sports a 5.0-inch HD (1280×720) display. It comes with 2GB RAM and 16GB storage, and runs Android 7.1.2 Nougat out of the box. A 2,410mAh removable battery is there to keep the lights on. No information on the release date, but if January 15 on the device's image (in the leak) is any indication, launch shouldn't be far off. Both T-Mobile and...
