HTC seems to have pulled the Oreo update for its 10 smartphone. The update was made available last week, both over-the-air as well as through RUU download. But a quick look now reveals the RUU link has been taken down and reports say users didn't receive any OTA notification as well. Many of those who managed to manually install the update have also been reporting battery issues and other problems, so it appears the build wasn't ready for prime time anyway. There's no information on when the update will be made available again. Source 1 2

Google's WiFi killing issue appears to be more widespread
Late last week, an issue came to light that causes WiFi networks to be killed. Initially it appeared the problem is with Google Home Max smart speaker, and is affecting only TP-Link routers (specifically the Archer C7). But now, with more users reporting their use cases, it seems the issue is more widespread than what we initially thought. Not only users with different TP-Link routers, but even those using Linksys, Synology, and other routers are also reporting the same problem. And in addition to those using Google Home Max, users with other Home devices (and even Chromecast...
Top 10 trending phones of week 2
The second week of the year ended with a rather unexpected phone on top of our trending chart. The still unofficial Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 took the crown, overtaking the Xioami Mi A1. A couple of Samsung handsets take the next two spots - the Galaxy A8 (2018) and the Galaxy J7 Pro. The Oppo F5 holds onto fifth, ahead of the Xiaomi Redmi 5A and the Samsung Galaxy Note8. Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 took eight to make it four handsets by the Chinese company in the top 10, while the final two spots are taken by the Galaxy S8 and the Apple iPhone X. This meant there's no room left for the Nokia...
Is Apple slowing down iPads with older batteries too?
We have a number of iPads in the family and given everything we now know about iPhone batteries and performance it was reasonable to ask if Apple is doing the same to its tablets. The short answer is don't worry, Apple isn't throttling your iPads performance based on the age of its battery. And now for the longer response. Power Management is a complex balancing act which is further compounded by an aging battery that is less able to provide power quickly enough to the system that needs it. This was the cause of unexpected iPhone shutdowns that Apple addressed a year ago in the its iOS...
Sunday debate: Saturated vs accurate screens
In this episode of the Sunday debate we discuss what is preferable - having a display with true to life colors or a punchier one. Ivan Over the last few years, screen accuracy has gotten the status of a hotword, not unlike optical zoom or fast charging, and now manufacturers throw it left and right as a major reason for you to buy a certain phone (or tablet). But quite recently, screen accuracy became a major sore point in the industry, especially when AMOLED screens are concerned. All of a sudden a screen with high contrast and saturated colors was something bad and we...
Weekly poll: Sony Xperia at CES 2018, hot or not?
Sony's Xperia XA line is home to some of the best mid-rangers, has been since it first hit the scene. That said, the third generation phones are much better than the ones that came before and are the highlight of CES 2018 for us (admittedly, there weren't that many phones unveiled). The original XA had the narrowest body of all 5" phones. The Xperia XA2 has grown since then but in return it offers a sharper, slightly larger screen - 5.2" and 1080p. It carries over the Xperia X-quality camera, but adds 2160p video capture thanks to the new processor. Better video is only part of the reason...
Comparing the Pixel 2 Portrait Mode to its Galaxy S8+ ported version
Manufacturers keep implementing dual camera setups on their phones to achieve the background blur for portrait pictures. Google's devices, the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL, have only one camera, but thanks to a combination of dual pixel phase detection and machine learning, they create some of the best portrait photos. An XDA-Developers user shared the latest build of the Google Camera app. That way any Android user can take amazing portrait pictures without hassle. We downloaded the apk file and installed it on two Android phones with different chipsets. Here are the results. First, we...
Weekly poll results: fingerprint readers below the screen is what you want in 2018
Sometimes it's the simple things in life - why complicate things with 3D facial scanning when the fingerprint reader does an excellent job already. Especially if that reader is in a convenient place, say under the screen. That's the feature that excites most of our readers, it got 38% of the vote in last week's poll. That will soon be a reality, vivo promises to put out a phone in early 2018. We put our finger on it and found that while it's not the fastest reader around it was average - impressive enough for first-generation tech. Surprisingly, not many people are looking forward to...

Counterclockwise: remembering the not-quite-smartphone Asha phones
HMD intends to resurrect the Asha series, which brought back some memories. The Asha phones featured more advanced functions than your typical featurephone, which made them attractive for those who couldn't afford a smartphone. Keep in mind that this story starts late 2011 - iOS, Android and even Symbian were still around, but options that delivered good experience were pricey. Before we start, we should mention that the Asha line was a key part of Nokia's "next billion" strategy - the plan to connect a billion people to the Internet, especially ones that don't have a PC or cable...
