Moto Z2 Force lands in China as the $1,507 Moto Z 2018 Kingsman VIP Special Edition

Huawei is usually the one to play naming games in the mobile world, but today Motorola's proved it can dabble in that realm too. See, Lenovo's subsidiary has launched a new smartphone in China - the Moto Z 2018. It even comes with a limited edition variation, called Moto Z 2018 Kingsman VIP Special Edition. Yet despite the name this is nothing but a Moto Z2 Force with a gold M logo on the back and a bunch of accessories thrown in for the special edition. The specs are exactly the same, the look is exactly the same, you get the idea - for all intents and purposes, this is a Z2 Force, just...

Gmail gets native add-ons across Android and web clients

Google is officially making Gmail add-ons available for everyone today, following a developer preview release that happened earlier this year. That has helped third parties build various add-ons for Gmail. Add-ons simplify your workflow because they allow you to perform certain actions (that so far would have required jumping to other apps) straight in Gmail. Your inbox can contextually surface specific add-ons based on the messages you receive, thus helping you get things done faster. Add-ons for Gmail work in both the Android app and the web client, and you only need to install...

Unlocked LG V30 goes on pre-order in the US for $829.99, out on December 5

In the US, the LG V30 is already available from carriers such as AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon, and has been for a couple of weeks in some cases. But what if you don't want anything to do with any of those companies and would rather purchase an unlocked unit? Well, if you don't want to go the eBay route and having a US warranty is essential to you (along with no band compatibility issues), then here's some good news and some bad news. The good news is that the unlocked LG V30 for the US market is now officially up for pre-order at B&H (only in Cloud Silver at the moment). The bad news is...

Amazon redesigns Kindle app for iOS and Android

Amazon has launched a redesigned version of its mobile app for iOS and Android. The main change with the new version is a redesigned UI, with an option for a new light or original dark theme, larger book covers, a shortcut to your last read book in the center of the bottom bar, along with link to the store to buy new books. You still can't buy any books within the iOS app though due to Amazon not wanting to concede 30% of its earnings to Apple so you can just look at them and use the browser to purchase. On Android you can purchase books right within the Kindle app as...

HTC is holding an event next week, on November 2 to be precise, for the unveiling of at least one new smartphone. Two new HTC devices have been in the rumors lately, the super high-end U11 Plus and the mid-range U11 Life which will be part of the Android One program. Today the Taiwanese company has released a new teaser image for the event, showing us a handset that has the design language of the U series, but the fingerprint scanner on the back - unlike past members of the family. Such a move has long been rumored for the U11 Plus, which is expected to be HTC's first smartphone...

Despite serious concerns over availability, Apple says that its stores will have stock but customers are encouraged to arrive early. Keep in mind that you'll likely face long lines, and it could all be for nothing as stores are expected to have limited supply. The iPhone X will launch in more than 55 countries at the same time. Here's the full list of iPhone X...

Sony Xperia XZ Premium gets an option to correct image distortion

Sony introduced a new camera for the Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia Xzs, which fixed the corner softness that was so characteristic of Sony cameras. If you've updated your XZ Premium, you can go ahead and enable it. The Xperia XZ Premium gains an option to correct geometric image distortion The new Motion Eye camera is also used on the Xperia XZ1 and XZ1 Compact, which already run Oreo. These will...

The Nikkei: Apple can ship only 20 million iPhone X this year

KGI estimated that Apple will ship 25-30 million iPhone X units this year, but information reported by The Nikkei points to an even lower number - "around 20 million". It sounds like manufacturing issues started a long way back and even though they are clearing up now, it will still affect the launch. Apparently, the new OLED screens were the first issue to occur - they wouldn't bond to the protective glass properly. With that fixed, the TrueDepth camera posed the next challenge. That too has been fixed and now the factories are cranking out iPhone X units at a pace of 10 million a...

Average selling price of phones went up 7% in Q3, a new record

Do recent smartphones feel more expensive? It's more than just your gut feeling, data by GfK shows a record rise in the average selling price (ASP) of phones for the third quarter of this year - it's up by 7% compared to the same period last year. Global demand rose moderately (up 3% YoY) to a total of 367 million units - the highest number for this period of the year. This growth was driven by Latin America (+11%) and Central and Eastern Europe (+9%) as traditionally strong markets are seeing a decline. Western Europe was the destination for 30.9 million phones, down 7% compared to...

Google Pixel and Pixel XL now getting Google Lens

Google has quietly started updating the Photos app on the Google Pixel and Pixel XL with the new Google Lens feature. Google Lens in Photos can detect objects and places in your photos and give you more information. It can also detect phone numbers and addresses and give you contextual actions like Call or Navigate. The new feature was first reported by Reddit user LaceratedCantaloupe from Google Photos v3.7.171902479 and since he hadn't received a Play store update the feature likely came through a server rollout. A few other users have reported the Google Lens feature in the Photos...

AnTuTu reveals that Oppo R11s will have a new dual camera

The Oppo R11s has mostly managed to avoid the paparazzi but it slipped up by leaving its specs at AnTuTu. Here are some of the changes that this wide-screen upgrade will bring. For one, the screen switches to 1,080 x 2,160px resolution - the 18:9 version of 1080p. The screen diagonal should be somewhere between 5.8" and 6", though the benchmark can't tell us that. The camera is different too - it now has two 20MP sensors, instead of 20MP + 16MP (the latter being the color sensor). So we're due for an upgrade in photo resolution, but it will be interesting to see if (and how) the sensor...

Google Pixel 2 XL display reportedly has "black smear" issues

Users are reporting yet another issue with display on the new Google Pixel 2 XL. Called a "black smear" issue, the problem manifests itself as a blur or smear whenever a dark color object moves on the screen and leaves a temporary trail behind. Let's play a fun game called "watch a Pixel 2 XL become a blue blob on a Pixel 2 XL" http://pic.twitter.com/RXQNVaCRYw— Stephen Hall (@hallstephenj) October 24, 2017 In a Twitter thread Stephen Hall of 9to5Google clearly shows the smear around the dark Pixel 2 XL on the screen as it scrolls up and down. He also demonstrated this in another example,...

Huawei has shipped more than 100 million phones in the first three quarters of 2017, marking a very impressive 19% increase over the same period last year. In the period from January to September Huawei managed to beat Apple's shipments to become the second smartphone vendor in the world, behind Samsung. Huawei ships a lot of phones in all price groups and under a few different brands. The low to mid-priced Nova smartphones as well as the mid to upper range Honor brands are both part of Huawei. Thanks to its strong shipments Huawei's operating revenue for the first three quarters...

First flash sale sees Nokia 7 going out of stock in minutes

As scheduled, the Nokia 7 went on sale today in China, and the device immediately went out of stock. This indicates there's a strong demand for the device in the country, although we are unsure how many units were available. The phone managed to score a total of over 150K registrations prior to the sale. Retailer JD says shipments for the Nokia 7 will begin October 31 onwards. There's currently no information on if and when the handset will be available in other key markets. HMD recently started sending out "save the date" emails for an event in India, so it's possible that the...

New Nokia phone heading to India on October 31

HMD is launching a new Nokia phone in India at the end of the month - October 31. The "save the date" emails went out, but they are vague about which device will be featured. It's labeled only as "the next milestone for Nokia phones". It could be the new Nokia 7, which starts selling in China tomorrow (a flash sale). Alternatively, the still-unofficial Nokia 2 - an affordable $99 handset - could be unveiled. Nokia 7 could arrive in India at the end of the month Then there's the Nokia 9, which cleared the FCC back in June and would be quite the milestone. But the Nokia 8 has...

Google Pixel 2 users reporting high-pitched and clicking sounds with their units

Shortly after Google said it's investigating the screen burn-in issue with the new Pixel 2 phones, another Pixel 2-specific issue has come to light. Basically, a large number of users are reporting that their units are making 'clicking and high pitch frequency sounds.' Here's what exactly users are observing (as explained by one of the affected users at the official Pixel forum): "Whenever the phone is unlocked, I can hear a constant ticking (like the second hand of a watch) if the phone is against my ear. Doesn't happen when the screen is off, or when the screen is on but the phone is...

Patent suggests Samsung Galaxy S9 may feature front-facing fingerprint sensor

The Samsung Galaxy S9 has already been the subject of a handful of rumors, and things are only expected to heat up from here. A patent filed by the South Korean company in its home country suggests the next-gen Galaxy S series of devices may come with a fingerprint sensor on the front. This year's Galaxy S8 came with a rear-mounted fingerprint reader. However, to say the least, the placement of the sensor didn't impress everybody. The patent in question is from 2016, but it's possible that Samsung may implement it in Galaxy S9 to address fingerprint sensor placement concerns. The...

New update rolling out to Samsung Galaxy Note8

Samsung has started pushing out a new update to the Galaxy Note8 smartphone. Currently rolling out to units in a couple of Asian markets, it's a security update that brings along Android fixes for the month of October. Specifically, Chinese and Hong Kong variants (SM-N9508 and SM-N9500) of the phone are getting the update. There's currently no information on what other changes (if any) the update includes. As is usually the case with OTA roll outs, it may take some time before the notification pops up on your device (if it hasn't already). For those outside of China and Hong Kong,...
